The battle for the conference championship will be hard fought with lots of great teams all looking to make their mark on the district tournament, and ultimately the state tournament. Continue reading for my breakdown of the best players to watch from District IV at the 4A level.
Jarrett Orthman, 2021: Orthman is a 6’1″ shooting guard from Burley High School with a great looking jumper and a quick release. His form looks slightly unorthodox, but he is a knockdown shooter with the ability to extend his range. Jarrett is always ready to shoot and has his feet set no matter where he is on the floor. I would expect the Bobcats to look for more opportunities to put the ball in his hands this season through various sets and motions. Orthman has the chance to have a really big impact for the Bobcats this season and I expect his numbers to increase.
Mikey Lloyd, 2022: The Jerome Tigers will look to Lloyd a lot this season to lead them in scoring and give the team an extra boost. Mikey is a 6’3″ shooting guard who has proven his ability to shoot the lights out and it is rare that he plays a game without connecting multiple times from downtown. Beyond his shooting ability, Lloyd can get to the rim and finish with either hand making him a dynamic offensive threat from anywhere on the court. The Tigers already run lots of off-ball action to get Mikey open and I would expect this to continue as Lloyd takes over in his junior season.
Brevin Trenkle Brevin Trenkle 6'0" | PG Minico | 2023 State ID , 2023: Trenkle is one of the most exciting prospects at the 4A level from the class of 2023. A big-bodied lefty guard, Brevin has the ability to score in traffic or get all the way to the rim for a tough finish. Minico has been a force at the 4A level in recent years and Trenkle got to be a part of a stacked roster last season where he learned from the best while also contributing lots of minutes. He will look to use that experience to build his skills and abilities for the next 3 years as he leads the Spartans in the 2020-21 season.
Brandon Bethel, 2022: Bethel is a point guard for the Mountain Home Tigers who does a little bit of everything. He has great vision and is willing to pass up a tough shot to kick to the open man. He can shoot from deep or pull-up on a mid-range jumper if he is not driving all the way to the basket, and he can finish with great footwork around the rim. Mountain Home will look to Brandon a lot this season on their quest for a run at the district title. Heading into his junior season, I expect Bethel to embrace his leadership role, improve his scoring abilities, and take on the challenge of facing the opposing team’s best defender every single night.
