I’m going to cover 3 athletes that I feel have really highlighted their skills so far this summer. From putting their name on the map to cementing their place among the top players in their class, these players have made the most of their grassroots summer.
Malachi Black Malachi Black 6'7" | PF Detroit University Prep Art & Design | 2021 State MI (2021, PF, Detroit University Prep Art and Design, All Out Elite)
Black is a special talent to say the least. He’s developed into a sort of combo forward, but he tantalizing part of his game for me, still exists in the paint. Black is a vertical player that is quick of the floor with 1 or 2 feet. He’s a natural rim protector that likes to send a ball back in the direction that it came. Black is outstanding in transition either running the wing or finishing behind the ball handler.
Nick Ellis (2022, PF, Grand Ledge, Michigan Cagers)
Harris has really shown what he’s all about here in the late summer. He’s a 6-8 true post player with a lot of upside. Post players like Harris don’t come around every day. He’s shown the ability to really take over and dictate a game in the paint. He has soft hands around the rim and nice touch from 15 feet in. Harris has shown that we as scouts, need to have him on our radar from here on out.
Jesse Lawson, Jr Jesse Lawson, Jr 6'4" | CG Walled Lake Northern | 2021 State MI Jr. (2021, CG, Walled Lake Northern, Michigan Cagers)
Lawson Jr. is showing why he could be considered underrated. He’s a versatile perimeter player with the ability to play on or off the ball. Lawson Jr. is a constant and consistent contributor. This was on display last weekend with the Michigan Cagers when he tallied a triple-double. Lawson Jr. has the looks of an on the court leader as well.
