Continue Reading270 Hoops has continued to lead the charge with the live streams allowing players the opportunity to be seen by multiple college coaches at different levels. Tuesday night brought in a second wave of 2021 prospects looking to show why they are some of Central Ohio’s better prospects. After watching the live streams myself, I breakdown the 6 top prospects who impressed the most from the 2021 Challenge.
Jarius Jones Jarius Jones 6'5" | SF Gahanna | 2021 State OH 6’5 SF (Gahanna Lincoln)- Jones caught my attention early on with his explosiveness off the perimeter. Combining high athleticism with his size and he is arguably one of the best wings in Central Ohio. Utilized his speed with his spin move and crossover dribbles to find the paint at will. Recently picked up a D1 offer from Jackson State. After this performance, don’t be surprised if more LM and D2s show interest.
Dominiq Penn 6’2 PG (Sunrise Christian)- Penn made his return in Columbus after last playing in the city for Dublin Coffman before transferring to Hamilton Heights last season. No doubt the best slasher at the event today. Very quick first step and easily gets in front of slower defenders. One of the better finishers and was very shifty around the rim in traffic. Penn will be spending a post grad year at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas.
Ian Schupp 6’5 SF (Worthington Kilboure)- Today was my first time seeing Schupp and I must say he will definitely be a name I will be watching going forward. Possesses a nice vertical leap to go with his 6’5 frame. Cleanup guy capable of finishing above the rim on second chance opportunities. Used his size and bounce to clean up on the glass, especially on the defensive end. Found himself in the right position defensively and got his hand on a few passes/drives during the event.
Leon Douglas 6’2 SG (Walnut Ridge)- Another new name on my radar. Douglas was one of the better defenders on display Tuesday. Has extremely quick feet and moves laterally cutting off drives. Impressed me with his defense on Dom Penn. On the offensive end, showed a nice 3PT shot once he gets hot. If he can become a consistent scoring threat, Leon will most likely be a name for small schools to keep an eye on this upcoming season.
Kobe Mitchell Kobe Mitchell 6'3" | PG Harrison Central | 2021 State OH 6’3 PG (Harrison Central)- If anyone boosted their stock from this event, it had to be Mitchell after an incredible offensive showing. A bigger guard from Eastern Ohio, Mitchell was automatic from beyond the arc, connecting on multiple 3PT shots throughout the games I watched. Able to score from multiple levels, Kobe was able to create shots for himself as well as showed a soft touch at the rim. High hustle player that made some plays on the defensive end as well and was unafraid of playing physical and diving on the floor for 50/50 balls. Per the live stream and 270 Hoops Zach Fleer, Mitchell holds an offer from Malone University currently. After today’s performance, don’t be surprised if Mitchell picks up more D2 offers over the next few weeks.
AJ Mirgon AJ Mirgon 5'11" | CG Hilliard Bradley | 2021 State OH 6’1 CG (Hilliard Bradley)- I had seen Mirgon play during AAU in July, but Tuesday night he caught my eye with his focus on the basics. He has great court vision and especially showed a knack for distributing the basketball to teammates in the half court. While he excelled doing this, he also showed an improved ability in attacking the paint. Defensively, he was arguably the best defender on display, absorbing contact on the perimeter and moving side-to-side with his feet.
Honorable Mention:
Tasos Cook Tasos Cook 6'2" | SG Westerville Central | 2021 State OH 6’2 SG (Westerville Central)- Multi-level scorer with a good handle of the ball.
Shemar Lindsey 6’4 PF (Columbus South)- Bigger interior threat. Passes well for a post player.
Andre Irvin Andre Irvin 5'8" | PG Olentangy Orange | 2021 State OH Jr. 5’9 PG (Olentangy Orange)- Extremely quick guard; solid breakdown on penetration.
Darius Parham Darius Parham 6'3" | SG Bishop Ready | 2021 State OH 6’3 SG (Bishop Ready)- One of the better shooters. Impressed with his pullup midrange game.
Royal Sibley Royal Sibley 6'6" | PF Whitehall | 2021 State OH 6’6 PF (Whitehall Yearling)- Wirey forward. One of the better finishers at the rim.
Jaiden Guice 6’2 SG (Westerville South)- All around talented guard. Most impressively a deadly shooter.
Trey Woodyard Trey Woodyard 6'6" | SF ISA | 2021 State OH 6’6 WG (ISA)- Big wing; didn’t score a ton but fantastic passer and smart ball player.
