So, what now?
A high school basketball season needs to take place. A season is only going to help players, especially prospects in the 2021 class, to be seen by college coaches.
But, will it happen? I’m not sure. A lot of others aren’t sure, but everyone is one thing: optimistic.
The 2021 class suffered the most from a not-so-much AAU season, because a lot of them were on the brink of some college interest. Some could have picked up some offers. Now, coaches and their players have to remain hopeful for a 2020-21 season.
I handpicked five players that could benefit from having a regular season and no, these five I’m about to name aren’t the only ones.
Jalen Brown, Wooddale: I have talked to a couple of assistant coaches from two different Division 1 programs about the 6-foot-4 scoring guard. Both were definitely interested in going after him. If a scoring guard is needed, Brown definitely fits the bill. Brown could have benefited from a summer since his junior season wasn’t what he had hoped for. But once the postseason started, Brown looked sharp and was putting up solid numbers.
Tadarius Jacobs, Memphis East: Jacobs has minor interest from a handful of college programs, but no one has yet to pull the trigger. I always thought Jacob would be a good fit for a program that needs a guard that’s good in pick-and-roll action. Not only is Jacobs good in that area, but he’s also good at picking his spots. Jacobs is going into his senior season without a single offer. So, yeah, a season needs to happen for him.
Tyler Fitzpatrick, Fayette Ware: Some college coaches inquired about Fitzpatrick and are hoping to see him play, especially once they found out that he’s a 6-6 wing. Fitzpatrick didn’t have a special junior season. He was up and down. Since the summer has been damaged by Covid-19, Fitzpatrick hasn’t been able to redeem himself. As I have said before, he has all of the tools to play at the next level. Fitzpatrick just needs to show it.
Daveonne Warfield, Kirby: Warfield has been putting up solid numbers for the past two seasons and a lot of people don’t know about him. Warfield does have a couple of junior college offers, but he’s pushing for other opportunities. Warfield is a high volume shooter and tends to make a lot of them, especially when he’s feeling it.
JaQuan Lax, Bolivar Central: Lax has been playing with the Tennessee Blazers this summer and was able to spark some college interest. That momentum needs to continue into his senior season. Lax is slept on and could be a good piece at point guard for a college program. His quickness, aggressiveness on the defensive end and scoring abilities should impress college coaches. They just need to see more of him.
