Continue ReadingCoach V (Russell Vanlandingham) was at it again last week, hosting a super competitive camp in San Antonio for Uncommon Basketball. This event was live streamed for the first time and had a ton of talent, from all over Texas, participating. I was able to catch up with the staff, a few coaches, the players and the parents to get their opinion about the lay out of the camp and it was unanimous, everyone was pleased with the results. One of the things that sets these camps apart is the extremely intense atmosphere. Diamonds are formed under pressure, and these camps have a knack for exposing true diamonds in the rough. Here were the top 8 prospects that attended along with the staffs assessment and projections on each prospect.
Jordan Roberts Jordan Roberts 6'2" | SG South Grand Prairie | 2021 State TX – South Grand Prairie HS
6’3 Guard | Class of 2021
Staff pick for most talented at the July Camp (24ppg in 6A). He has a knack for scoring in a variety of ways. Great size for a guard and versatile on the offensive end. Has the talent, length and athleticism to become a solid D1 LM/MM 2 way player. Jordan must be more consistent on the defensive end but the tools are there to become a high level defender as he matures. Big time steal for any D2+ program right now with D1 potential based on progress in off-the-ball areas. I really believe this kid will figure it out based on how he responds to correction, and whoever is on him early will get a steal in the 2021 class.
John Muhammad John Muhammad 6'5" | SF Mansfield Legacy | 2021 State TX – Mansfield Legacy HS
6’3 Guard | Class of 2021
Big guard with the versatility to play 2-4 on offense and defense. Really good at getting to the basket and finishing in traffic. Great mid-range game but must get more consistent from the 3pt line to move up a level (D1). Right now a no brainer for D2’s that recruit versatile guards with size. Perfect fit for an up-tempo system offensively and another prospect that can easily increase his stock and end up a D1 prospect! Has the tools, size, motor and mindset so his best is in front of him.
Robert Williams – Humble HS
6’3 Guard | Class of 2021
Big time football player with multiple D1 offers, but loves basketball. Came in unknown on the basketball side but was the staff pick as most competitive at the camp. Mid Major/High Major athlete and easily the most competitive player at the camp that stays in attack mode on both ends. Rob competes every possession and has a great 15 feet and in game. Finishes strong and above the rim in traffic. If he decides to choose basketball over football, he’s a D2+ wing and great FIT for any program that plays physical man defense and looks for toughness in prospects. Just too much physical ability to go along with a high motor to not have on your board heading into the Fall semester.
Isaiah Washington – Cornerstone Christian School
6’0 Guard | Class of 2021
Top prospect at the camp when it comes to WINNING for two consecutive UCExposure Camps. No matter what scenario Isaiah was put in, he seemed to find a way to WIN. Won the skills challenge, 3 on 3 defensive stops competition, 4 on 4 tourney and Top Prospects championship game. This camp’s layout is designed to evaluate who can actually play in a college intense setting. Isaiah, for two camps in a row, has passed the test and all he does is find ways to help his team win. The staff loved how he challenges himself on the defensive end to shut down the best player, and his work ethic reiterates that he will eliminate his weaknesses. High ceiling that is a D3+/NAIA steal right now with D2 upside heading into 2021. Get on him early as my gut says his stock will continue to rise as we move into the Spring!
Jailen Bedford – Hutto HS
6’3 Guard | Class of 2021
This was the 3rd Camp that UCExposure has been able to evaluate Jailen and each camp he gets better! Has the size and versatility that college coaches look for at the guard position. Jailen has the ability to defend the 1-3 spots with his length and competitive spirit, and will only get better moving forward with his work ethic. Explosive athlete that will be a great pickup for any program recruiting combo guards in the 2021 class. Can really score from the wing position, and see’s the floor well enough to make PG plays with the ball in his hands. D2+ player with Low Major D1 upside heading into the 2020-2021 season. Get him on your radar!
Adrian “AJ” Haines – Randolph HS
5’9 PG | Class of 2021
One of the top surprises of the July camp. Once the 5 on 5 started AJ clearly let everyone know he was the best true PG at the camp. Pushed the tempo, made others better, communicated on the defensive end, and ultimately led his team to the final game with his leadership skills. A TRUE PG with leadership skills that are hard to teach. A little undersized for the higher levels, but has everything you look for in a PG in the 2021 class. Really impressive in all facets throughout the entire camp. Great fit for programs that like to push it and open up the court offensively. Under the radar right now but one to watch in 2021!
Jake Arnold Jake Arnold 6'3" | SG Katy Taylor | 2021 State TX – Katy Taylor HS
6’3 Guard | Class of 2021
More of a combo guard than a PG at the next level, but position aside this kid can flat out score. Moves well without the ball so he always makes the D work, and understands angles that puts pressure on more athletic defenders (24.5ppg in 6A – Houston Region). Some might question his foot speed, but at the end of the day JAKE CAN FLAT OUT PLAY! Jake is a full ride player that will have a great 4 year career at the next level. He is one of those players that has a great overall resume heading into the 2020-2021 season (low maintenance, high character, top of his class academically & can flat out score). Jake still needs the right system at the next level but is no brainer for D2+ programs that recruit freshmen and run a HC motion type of system. Could easily move into the D1 Ivy League/Low Major level by the Spring.
Miguel Mantilla – Lake Travis HS
6’6 Forward | Class of 2021
The sleeper of the camp! UCExposure has evaluated Miguel before and was impressed with his IQ, solid skill set, and size as a pick and pop forward. At the July camp he took it up a notch mentally and physically and was the staff pick for stand-out performer in a one day setting. At 6’6, with his versatility and ability to face up, he came in as a D3+ prospect but left as a NAIA/D2 prospect for programs looking for forwards in the 2021 recruiting class. Miguel DOMINATED the camp from start to finish and came in with the mindset that he could outplay any 3/4s that had more hype. All day long he attacked the glass, rebounded everything, scored it, and was more physical than his opponents throughout the camp. On offense he showed the ability to put it on the floor vs quicker players. If Miguel competes like he did at this camp his stock will rise quickly in the 2020-2021 season.
