These players can shoot from deep, mid-range, free-throw, off-the-dribble and standing still. Recent sharpshooters from the Columbus City League are names such as Joel Jackson, Terrale Clarke, Kyle Oglesby and this writer’s personal favorite Antonio Bumpus. Every player on this list will have the chance to show colleges they can never be left open and stretch the defense opening up chances for teammates. This list is in order and covers all classes, only excluding incoming freshmen and transferring players.
5. JJ Simmons JJ Simmons 5'10" | PG Beechcroft | 2022 State OH ; Junior- Beechcroft: As an all-around player, Simmons may be the best junior in the Columbus City League and one his best attributes is his ability to take and make jumpers. Teams cannot leave Simmons open, his shot looks slightly awkward but it drops. His mid-range jumper is automatic and he has the strength to get defenders off of him and the athleticism to not get his shot blocked. The close to 6-foot point guard loves the wing three-pointer and knocks it down with accuracy, he also shoots free-throws at a high rate.
4. Davion Bridges; Sophomore- Northland: This young man proved as a freshman that he can flat out shoot the ball in just the 9 games that he played. The 5-foot-8 guard made his bones this past season as more of a set shooter, hitting 3 three-point field goals at Beechcroft. With Mahkale Massey getting most of the attention, expect more open jump shots for Bridges. The next leap for Bridges will be shooting off of the dribble which is difficult for him since he is shorter than most young men who will guard him.
3. DaVonte Curry; Junior- Briggs: The returning point guard is expected to make a huge leap with his overall play, but his shooting stroke is just fine. He nailed 4 three-pointers in one game and uses his speed and shiftiness to get open and get his shot off. He is better shooting off the dribble than catching and shooting, and knocks down his free throws at a high rate. Curry understands how to get himself open using his handles and quickness.
2. Jaylen Hudson; Senior-Beechcroft: The best shooter on the Cougar basketball team may be this young man. Hudson has the capability to get hot and tilt a quarter into Beechcroft’s favor. The 5-foot-7 guard uses his knowledge of angles and passing lanes to space the floor and get open to hit jumpers from a JJ Simmons JJ Simmons 5'10" | PG Beechcroft | 2022 State OH drive-and-kick or in the post from Amani Lyles Amani Lyles 6'7" | C Beechcroft | 2022 State OH . Hudson has shown that teams better keep a man close or else he will drain jumper after jumper until a hand gets into his face.
1. Dorson Butler; Senior- Marion Franklin: Put him alone in a gym and tell him to make 100 jumpers and he’ll be done before breakfast. Butler is the most consistent shooter from any spot on the court in the Columbus City League south. He is automatic at the free-throw line and if you leave him open, just get ready to set up your offense. Butler is best shooting off the dribble, because of his long arms and wing-span, it is hard to block his shot. Butler uses his jump shooting capabilities to get inside the paint, shoot over taller defenders and get fouled.
