Obviously, things had a twist seeing as of all of the COVID-19 restrictions, but even with them, the tournament seemed to run very smoothly. There was a great number of teams coming from throughout the state of Texas as well as Oklahoma and Arkansas which only lead to a more competitive environment.
Kolby Williams – Texas Takeover NED
A ferocious dunker is an attribute that Kolby Williams truly obtains, and this mostly comes from his insane vertical that elevates him against all other defenders. The way Williams is able to get in the paint and jump out of the gym to get buckets is unmatched. His vertical allows him to put down the most unrealistic dunks that make the defenders that try to guard him look silly. I loved getting to watch this guy play because he really makes you feel like you’re watching a dunking highlight reel at all times.
Kaden Morgan Kaden Morgan 6'2" | CG Byron Nelson | 2021 State TX – Legion Elite
Kaden most likely could just be named shapeshifter with the way he gets past defenders. Every time he drives, he is able to put the ball off the glass and into the bucket even when it seems like a defender could easily block him. In his game against Team MASH, Kaden was able to drop 23 points for his team which just proved to everyone in that gym that he was no joke to mess around with. With a great shot and a shifty driving ability, Kaden comes off to me as one of the best players from the U17 side of the tourney this past weekend.
Jordan Walsh Jordan Walsh 6'7" | SF Link Academy | 2022 #31 Nation MO – Drive Nation EYBL
I loved watching this kid played because every time he drove to the paint, his explosiveness immediately reminded me of Russell Westbrook. He is truly the definition of an athletic finisher, and with such a talented team already, I still feel that Jordan still shines over some of them with his ability to go up and dunk on anyone. In a tough game against NP Force, Walsh was able to get to the hoop as well as around multiple defenders at least four times. I really enjoyed seeing him and his team play this weekdn, and I feel like he is an explosive player to look out for in these coming tournaments.
Thibaut Tagnon – BMM (Basketball Means More)
Another guard on this list that I thought was super athletic was Tbo. His ability to get buckets was on another level this past weekend, and he was able to show that in his games where he had double-digit points in the paint. Overall, he is a player that I think shows his versatility no matter which side of the ball he’s on. I personally love his ability to drive around one defender to also just make another flashy play on a guy that comes to help in the paint. He is another player that will only improve as he comes out of summer and into his senior season.
Jimel Cofer Jr. – Drive Nation EYBL
When playing against teams like NP Force that specialize in their ability to defend and create a crowded paint, Jimel is still able to sort through traffic and get around the intense NP Force paint. He also was able to get up a couple of shots that solidified to me that he had a fluid jump shot. I think that his abilities will only shine more as he stays surrounded by such a talented group of teammates. As a college scout, I would be looking at the entire team of U17 Drive Nation because there are always standouts like Jimel that shine when given the ball.
