Looking ahead to Staten Island’s high school atmosphere, it sees the key departure of many island stalwarts, but has replacements ready to take up the mantle. The players in this section of the list will be looking for their own years as they look to take their game to the next level.
14. Frank Barbato | Junior | Tottenville
There are two types of scorers in basketball: volume and efficiency. Barbato has spent his junior season proving that he is as efficient as a scorer can be. Barbato hasn’t been taking the ball possession after possession, but rather methodically chooses which possessions he should attempt a score over a pas. This has benefitted his play, making defenders pay, especially from beyond the arc.
13. Tariq Tuggle | Sophomore | Port Richmond
In only his sophomore season, Tariq Tuggle has already shown flashes proving that he can be a leader for this Port Richmond squad. Tuggle has shown he can do it all, from drive to the rim and convert at the line to shoot all over the floor, whether it be from a pass or his own dribble. This junior year, Tuggle hopes he can finally make the leap from good to great.
12. Patrick Gardner | Junior | Farrell
Patrick Gardner has done his part in bringing a fruitful basketball season to Farrell, primarily a football school, for the 2020 season. Gardner has shown that he can run the offense and take over the primary playmaker role, with Gardner showing an affinity for driving at the rim and creating hard contact with defenders. He has excelled on defense, having good perimeter play while being able to start fastbreaks to stimulate the offense.
11. Justin Mason | Junior | Wagner
This season on Wagner’s varsity squad, Justin Mason has really proved to the Island that he can lead a varsity basketball, both off the court and on the court. Mason worked game after game to speed down the floor on offense from opportunities he created from his defense. In a standstill, Mason has shown his ability to drive to the rim, while he also has great court vision and an impeccable ability to accurately deliver the ball to his waiting teammates.
10. Matt Hanley | Sophomore | Farrell
Another player out of Farrell, Matt Hanley has proved that you don’t need to be a senior to be an effective big. The forward is able to be a great rim runner on offense, while he is still able to continuously put in second-chance points. Hanley has also shown that he can space the floor, as he proved he can cash in from deep mid-range and the three-point land.
9. Khristian Cooper | Junior | Petridies
To put it short, Petrides did not have a good season last year, as they finished last in Staten Island’s PSAL division. However, if there were to be one bright spot from that performance, it would be Khristian Cooper. Cooper has shown he can both play offense at a high level, in all facets of the sub sport, while he also can take on a team’s top player and be the lockdown defender.
8. Christian Greeley | Freshman | Moore
Christian Greeley has outperformed absolutely all expectations during his freshman season at Moore. Greeley has shown that even though he is young, he is able to lead the offense, running the floor from defense to offense. Greeley has also shown his incredible perimeter defense, and has shown that putting him in charge of a varsity team was not a mistake. As Greeley has three more seasons left on the Island, it will certainly be a record-breaking show to watch.
