We lead off the series with the point guards, which features 13 ballers that made our top 50 rankings. Each of these players stood-out and made an impact with their play during grassroots circuits or for their respective varsity teams throughout their high school career.
Here is the San Antonio Rankings: Top 2021 Point Guards (#8-13)
#8 – Brayden Jaeckle (6-0) – Alamo Heights
Jaeckle is a jack-of-all-trades player who can play either guard position and is a three-level scorer. Jaeckle averaged 11.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game for the Mules during his junior season. He is a crafty ball-handler who can create open shots for himself, including step-back threes and pull-up jumpers. He is lethal as a spot-up, and catch-and-shoot deep-range sharpshooter. Jaeckle also has the ability to drive by defenders and is a smooth finisher at the basket. Earned All-District 27-5A Second Team.
#9 – Beau Cervantes (5-10) – Steele
A true facilitator on the court who does a great job of reading the floor, Cervantes is constantly finding open teammates with accurate and creative passes. During his junior season, Cervantes averaged 5.2 points, 1.9 assists, and 1.5 rebounds per game for Steele. Outside of dishing dimes to teammates, he is also a potent three-point shooter with extended range. On defense, Cervantes plays with great energy and anticipation.
#10- Ja’Kobe Barkley (6-0) – Harlan
A tremendous athlete at the point guard position for Harlan, Barkley plays with great speed and can get to the rim at will. He is able to create space with smooth handles and a quick first step. When penetrating the lane, Barkley has great burst towards the rim and is a strong finisher through contact. He is very hard to stop in transition when he is going full steam ahead with the ball in his hands. Barkley is also an incredibly physical defender who is tough to get around. Earned All-District 28-5A Second Team.
#11 – Keith Davis (6-0) – Reagan
Davis is a smooth and crafty point guard who does a great job of getting into the lane and finishing around the basket. During his junior season at Reagan, he averaged 12.7 points, 2.1 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game. Davis has a terrific hesitation move that allows him to blow by defenders to get into the lane. He shows good body control in the paint and is a creative finisher at the basket. Also has the ability to hit open shots from three-point range. Earned All-District 27-6A Second Team.
#12 – Justin Bussey (5-11) – Brennan
Bussey is on the verge of a breakout senior season after playing limited minutes for Brennan last year behind a senior-led squad. A quick and explosive guard, Bussey does a great job of penetrating the lane and finding open teammates or finishing at the basket. He has the versatility to play either guard position and is a good spot-up shooter from beyond-the-arc. Is a sticky on-ball defender who can pick-pocket his opponents. Be on the lookout for Bussey this upcoming season.
#13 – Ayden Zavala (6-0) – Madison
A sharpshooting point guard prospect, Zavala knows how to score in a variety of ways and is especially lethal from beyond-the-arc. Zavala averaged 13.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game during his junior season for the Mavericks. He is a lights out shooter from three-point range as he hit 40% of his shots from deep last season. Not only can he shoot, but he has a strong frame and is physical when attacking the rim. Zavala is also more than willing to battles for rebounds and is a scrappy defender. Earned All-District 27-6A Second Team.
