The rising senior is an explosive guard that has a great burst with the rock in his hands. Ultra smooth ball handler that understands how to manipulate ball screens. Finishes well at the rim using tremendous body control. Capable pull up jump shooter that can create his own shot from multiple levels. This past weekend Johnson and his Illinois Hoopstars National 17U squad played at the #HardWorkSZN Kickoff in Appleton, Wisconsin. We caught up with him to get his thoughts on the weekend!
“Personally for me I feel like I played solid overall. I know I could’ve played better, but I’m still getting used to the team a little. I can say the same thing for the team as well. After all our games we talked about what we could have done better and that was getting in the gym more with each other. Once we learn how to play off each other I don’t feel like any team can beat us.”
With quarantine this spring/early summer there hasn’t been many opportunities to play competitive games, but Johnson spoke about where he has seen the most improvement.
“The most growth I have seen in my game is my physicality. My father has been making me work on my body every day and staying in shape because he told me ‘I’m not a senior no more. You have to treat your body as if you’re in college.’ Now every time I’m playing I can take/feel less bumps and still finish around my defender.”
Where do things stand with recruiting at the moment?
“Every day I’m talking to different schools, but I will be coming out with my top schools soon.”
His current offer reads like this: UIC, Youngstown State, Chicago State, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, Colorado State, Loyola, Elon, Valparaiso, Southern Illinois, Siena, Bowling Green, Appalachian State, and Miami (OH). Many of his fellow top 2021 in-state prospects are coming off the board fast. He spoke with us about his timeline for making a call.
“Most likely August or early September.”
Any schools he would like to see in person before making a call if possibly by NCAA rules?
“Loyola, Colorado State, Siena, Elon, and UIC I can always go see if I want.”
Now that it is coming down the stretch what will he be looking at to separate these schools?
“What school really fits my style of play. Where I’ really comfortable staying and playing. What coach can really develop me and believe in my abilities to help make it to the next step of my career.”
