The Santa Margarita high school senior has kept himself busy with his development during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a strict regiment of workouts and meal plans to not only keep his game sharp, but to also make sure he’s in shape when high school programs are able to get back on the court.
“I was looking forward to utilizing AAU to show coaches what I can do and what I’ve been working on,” Blazona said. “Not having that has been very tough, but I’ve kept myself on a strict schedule and been disciplined. Monday, Wednesday and Friday I will lift, then get 500 made shots in the backyard and later those nights I will go play pick up. Tuesday and Thursday I’ll go for a run to keep my cardio up, get more shots up and play more pick up.”
The 6-footer is well-known in Southern California basketball circles as one of the most reliable true point guards in the area. Blazona is extremely poised and patient against pressure, operates with a pass-first mentality, orchestrates his team’s offense efficiently, and is an active on-ball and smart team defender.
The key areas that Blazona needs to work on to take his game to the next level are on the offensive end of the floor with his catch-and-shoot three-point shot along with his confidence in his offensive package.
“The pandemic has forced me to do a lot of self-reflection,” Blazona said. “All of my coaches have told me my jump shot needs to be a tool for me and something that I work on. Along with that I need to be in attack mode with my offensive mindset and always be a threat.”
Blazona said he has heard from a variety of schools across the country, many of which are of the high academic variety. The Eagles’ leader reports interest from Point Loma, University of Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, Grinnell, Oberlin, Cal Lutheran, Fresno Pacific and is hearing a lot from high academic schools on the east coast.
As far as what Blazona is looking for with a role at the next level, he’s definitely looking for an opportunity to get on the floor and doesn’t care which level that is at.
“I want to be on the court playing,” he said. “I feel I can definitely play D3 and D2 and make an impact immediately. I need to show everyone how my shot and ability to attack and score has gotten better since the season ended. I will go anywhere to play and I really want a good relationship with the head coach which is something I have always had.”
