Last year on a senior-laden South Salem team, the sharp-shooting 6-foot-2, 175-pound combo guard settled into a key role off of the bench. Phipps is set on taking on much more responsibility his senior year and as he seeks the opportunity to play at the next level, he is thankful for how much he learned this past season.
“The two senior guards around me really helped me grow and they really helped me in my role and knowing what to do,” Phipps said. “I was able to do what I could do help make the team better.”
Last year, Phipps was the first guy off of the bench and provided instant offense, particularly with his outside shooting. In averaging 5.9 points, he shot just under 44 percent from three, largely coming off of wide open looks spotting up. With senior guards Trey Galbraith Trey Galbraith 5'9" | PG South Salem | 2020 State OR and Kieran Pruitt moving on to college, Phipps knows his role will be different so he’s been prepping for that this off-season.
“I need to be a team leader so I’m definitely working on being a facilitator for next year,” Phipps said. “I’m working on my handles and being able to make the people around me better. Last year I was definitely more of a come in and get buckets scorer and play some defense, so I’m trying to get a lot better defensively too. I want to do everything that I can do to help us get wins.”
Phipps is hoping to play at the college level and the high-academic student with a near 4.0 GPA is keeping things wide open. “I haven’t gotten any recruitment interest yet but that just makes me want to get a lot better,” Phipps said. “I see where other people are and if I know I’m better then them, I’ve got to try and get better myself and show people what I can do. I want to play with any team that will support me and help me get better.”
Phipps is suiting up with the 17U South team of the Oregon Prospects and he’s excited about the tournaments they’ll be playing in the near future. “I want to win every game that we play and help everyone get better and have fun,” Phipps said.
Phipps is not currently ranked in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2021 rankings but will be added in the next update.
