There are so many well-run grassroots programs located in the state that it’s becoming difficult to keep track of them all, and the number continues to grow. I got the opportunity to see a ton of underrated prospects this past weekend while attending PrimeTime Sports D-Town Showdown at the Advantage Sports Complex in Carrollton, Texas.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at a few individuals who caught my eye:
Kevin Thompson | 2021 Combo Guard | DC Kings Denton 17U | Denton Ryan HS – Thompson is one of those guys that exudes confidence whenever he steps on the floor. There is a swagger to his game. He is a herky-jerky ball handler who only needs one or two steps to get to full speed. He floats when he elevates for close range attempts. Defensively, he slides his feet well and has active hands.
Landon Condiff | 2021 Combo Guard | DC Kings Denton 17U | Callisburg HS – Condiff is calm, cool, and collected at all times. He is always under control. Although he is a guard, he was forced to play down low a lot during this tournament out of necessity. However, that allowed him to show off his versatility. Condiff is a high IQ player with crafty handles, excellent court vision, and a smooth shooting stroke. The soon-to-be senior is a great defender as well, coming away with tons of steals. He was easily one of the best two-way players I saw last weekend.
Myles Watkins | 2021 Shooting Guard | Team United Texas 17U White | Frisco Centennial HS – Watkins is a fluid player who is at his best when he gets downhill. He has a variety of moves he can go to when he attacks the basket. He can penetrate to score, but also showed that he has the ability to drop it off to a big or kick it out to a shooter if nothing is there.
Matthew Oltrogee | 2022 Shooting Guard | HG Elite Chad | Argyle Liberty Christian School – Oltrogee drilled four threes in the first half of one of the games I saw him in, ultimately finishing the contest with five triples. He thrives at shooting from the catch, but also showed that he can make triples off the dribble. This kid is a sniper.
Sterling William Curtis | 2022 Shooting Guard | HG Elite Chad | Lewisville HS – Curtis is an outstanding perimeter defender both on and off the ball. His disciplined nature frustrates the players he guards. That said, Curtis is more than just a defensive presence. The 6’3″ two-guard can shoot the three ball from the catch, finish in traffic on the break, and hit from mid-range when given the space. He is a really solid all-around prospect.
Ethan Evans | Small Forward | Team United Texas 17U White – Even after poking around online for a while, I could not find anything on Ethan Evans. That surprised me, because he is a talented shooter with deep range and good size. Evans has a long and wiry frame and a pretty jumper. He makes the extra pass when necessary as well. He seemed to be most comfortable shooting from the catch in the corners.
Trey Shaw | Combo Guard | NTX Bulls – Shaw is another prospect who is virtually an unknown. He is a feisty on ball defender who has a knack for pick-pocketing opposing ball handlers. He isn’t afraid to get up into his opponent on defense and refuses to give up an inch. Additionally, he has a rainbow arcing jump shot that looks like it is going to touch the ceiling every time he lets it go, but it seems to work for him. He has some range to his shot too.
