Continue ReadingThe Columbus City League north division is stacked higher than The Rock’s cheat meal pancakes with talent this season, and twice a week teams will scratch and claw their way for a spot in the Columbus City League Championship. Top players will compete for a spot on the actual team that will be set at the end of the season and to be called the best at their position. Compiling this team was harder than making both free throws with no time on the clock down by 2, but it had to be done. This list will try to take into account position, but in this area a guard can be the same height as a post player, and is based on what this writer believes will happen with the players individually and the team success surrounding them.
JJ Simmons JJ Simmons 5'10" | PG Beechcroft | 2022 State OH ; Junior- Beechcroft: Simmons leads the most talented team in the division and the team with the most to prove from last season. After not making it to the championship game then having Covid-19 stop their playoff journey, the Cougars are on a mission. Simmons specifically has not let this pandemic slow him down because he has been in the gym daily, getting better and the results will show this season.
Jaylen Gilbert; Senior- Centennial: This young man will carry his team to whatever success they will have as a new coach arrives for the Stars. No matter how many wins are under his belt by season’s end, Gilbert’s numbers will leap from the 16 points per game he put up last season. The consistency king will continue his roll this upcoming season, hopefully his team can come on the ride with him.
Mahkale Massey; Senior- Northland: The numbers he puts up this year as coach Sean Taylor’s 2020 version of Antonio Bumpus will remind Columbus that this young man could be the best overall player in his class. Massey looks to put the Vikings back to where they have been more than anybody in the past decade, the Columbus City League title game. The ball will be in his hands more and he will looked upon to pace Northland to big wins.
Shamarion Rogers; Senior- Linden McKinley: Rogers is the best player on the defending north division champions and he should not be overlooked. He will lead his team into this season knowing that going back-to-back is hard and if this team does that, they will need him to be better without Chance Groce Chance Groce 6'5" | SF Linden McKinley | 2021 State OH . Expect this young man to rise to the expectations of a renewed fan base on the north side of Columbus.
Amani Lyles Amani Lyles 6'7" | C Beechcroft | 2022 State OH ; Junior- Beechcroft: The premier big man in Columbus, Lyles has his partner-in-ball with Simmons and they have enough chemistry to teach their own class. No other big man in the division is in his class and this season will prove that as he will look to dominate in the paint on both sides of the ball. Being on the most loaded team in the division helps as well, the team success combined with his numbers will be more than enough to get him onto this team.
