Here’s a look at some of the top Kansas guards in the 16U Division of the Midwest Grind Session (in alphabetical order and with club and high school listed):
Mateo Hyman Mateo Hyman 6'2" | CG Seaman | 2022 State KS , Kansas Hoggs, Seaman:
The slick 6-foot point guard burst on the scene with Seaman last winter. Now he’s the floor general for the talented Hoggs that features about half of Seaman’s returners. He can really break down a defense and make some highlight plays in the lane. He’s a steady ball handler, selfless distributor and quick athlete.
Howard Johnson, SSA Black, Junction City:
The instant-offense guard gets be the primary point guard for SSA Black. The 5-foot-11 rising junior is already a top player in the Centennial League with a ton of experience. He can shoot from anywhere and get to the rim consistently. Johnson is a good-enough ball handler and passer to play the point even in the ultra up-tempo summer circuit.
Logan Libel, B2B Elite, Goddard:
Libel is listed as a 2024 prospect. The 5-foot-10 guard was one of several lightning-fast ball handlers on the B2B Blue Jays. Libel is a sure ball handler under pressure who finds the open man both from the perimeter and on the move. He is a fearless driver who can make an effective pull-up jumper. He has a nice stroke and can hit an impressive fade-away 3-pointer.
Geremiah Moore Geremiah Moore 5'9" | CG West | 2022 State KS , Team Perry Ellis 34, Wichita Northwest:
Moore is a small but sturdy point guard who is a reliable ball handler and heady facilitator. He keeps his eyes up on the break, finding his teammates for opportunities to break down a defense. He can knock down 3-pointers as well. On defense, he cuts off ball handlers and fights hard on the glass.
Harrison Voth, Mid Kansas, Cheney:
Voth was honorable mention all 3A as a sophomore. He has about as perfect a shooting stroke as you’ll find. If he’s given an inch, he will drain 3-pointers from deep, but he can also drive and knock down jumpers in the lane. At 6-foot-1, he is big and athletic enough to block shots in the lane. He finds his teammates effectively and plays at top speed.
Jaylen West, Showtime, Abilene:
West is an ultra-quick 5-foot-9 guard who drives aggressively, able to get to the rim or kick to open teammates. His quickness sets up defenders for his-and-go moves in open floor. He can shoot from deep, and he’s a tough defender because of his physical strength and ability to pick pockets.
