Here’s a look at some of the top Kansas posts in the 15U Division of the Midwest Grind Session (in alphabetical order and with club and high school listed):
Cole Coonrod, SSA White, Manhattan:
Coonrod is tall, lean and athletic. At 6-foot-4, he was one of the taller 15U posts, and has some of the most pure big man skills. He’s not floating around the perimeter a ton, and he’s focused on making his presence felt down low. He blocks shots and defends the post well. He can pass well and find open teammates, and he also can face the basket and drive effectively. He also has nice touch on his free throws. With the depletion of the senior-laden Manhattan roster, Coonrod will bring some youth and much needed height to the Indians next fall.
David Oyana, Oz Elite 2023 – Red, Sunrise Christian:
An absolute giant of a rising sophomore, Oyana is listed at 6-foot-11. His chiseled frame belies his youth – he’s got a man’s body already. He played at Sunrise as a freshman and is focused on honing his game. It might not be all there yet, but this is a player to watch. Defense can be his strength right now. His athleticism is off the charts. He plays like a true rim-protector, leaving his man to try to swat shots by drivers. His offense is still a work in progress, but he’s competing with some of the best in the nation on a daily basis with Oz Elite 2023 – Red.
Nate Purkey, Wichita Padres, Eisenhower:
Purkey uses his big build to his advantage, but he’s much more than a post player. The versatile 6-foot-2 Purkey moves well in the lane for his size, and he’s willing to shoot from midrange and beyond the arc. He has good hands and can help bring the ball up the floor. For a big man, he hustles for rebounds, loose balls and to get back on defense.
Eli Sawyers, Oz 2023, Southeast of Saline:
The 6-foot-5 Sawyers was one of the most impressive players in the entire field. He tore it up for Oz 2023 in 15U, then suited up for Kansas Pray N Play 17U and didn’t back down a bit. He has a remarkably versatile game. His size and athleticism are elite for his age, and his skills are just as impressive. He’s smooth, relaxed and looks like he’s enjoying himself. He can handle the ball, create off the dribble, play above the rim, and make his teammates better.
