Continue ReadingThe Colorado RoughRiders put together an invitational where they put some of the top teams in the state in the same gym and let them go at it. It was productive, fun, and competitive. Teams got the opportunity to get together in light of recent cancellations, and some teams and players stood out. Here are some intriguing 17U standouts from this past weekend to conclude the event.
Tanner Lamb Tanner Lamb 5'10" | SG Legend | 2021 State CO – Colorado Hoops Academy
Lamb went into the event with everyone knowing exactly what he was going to do. Find the open spots on the floor and make the opposing team pay. The thing is, even with everyone knowing what he is going to do, he still managed to do it. Lamb has unlimited range, and if he gets his feet set, its as good as done. Lamb was hitting shots on the move, getting up and down the court and finding his spots, and also his gravity for hitting a couple in a row made the pick and roll man start jumping the screens which got a teammate open. Lamb is one of the state’s top shooters, and at times he put that on display. It is going to be fun to continue to watch him light it up this summer.
Jameel Wright – Colorado Hawks
The surprise standout of the entire event was Colorado Hawks lead guard, Jameel Wright. Wright was relatively unknown heading into the event, but by the end of it, people wanted to know more about the guard. Wright controlled everything. His pace is unparalleled; he finished through traffic, his feel for the game is elite, and he is who provided sparks for the Hawks when things looked stagnant on offense. Wright did a bit of everything. He was on the boards, he knocked down 3-pointers and also set his teammates up for smooth finishes. Wright had flashes where he looked great as the only guard for the Hawks. He is going to be interesting once the season starts and is a player I will be following closely for the rest of the summer.
Tanner Egloff – Pro Skills
Egloff was the hardest working player in the entire event, and it was not close. His motor, ability to give his all on every single possession, and willingness to defend whoever it is that is in front of him no matter the position makes him one of the most intriguing players for Pro Skills. “To leave no stone unturned,” is a great idiom that translates to his game. He might not score a ton, and things that he does aren’t always on the scoreboard, but he is the engine for Pro Skills 17U team and a joy to watch. He goes for every board and cleans them up for the opportunity for his team, he runs the floor with great spacing, and on a team that did not have an actual big on the floor at all times, he was who defended the bigger guys and held his own. With the game on the line and you need an extra rebound or stop, you go with Egloff.
Tom Connelly Tom Connelly 6'4" | SF Denver East | 2021 State CO – Pro Skills
Connelly is coming into his own. As his confidence grows, the rest of his game follows. Connelly has continued to put his name in as one of the best shooters in the state that does not get talked about enough. He had multiple shots from near halfcourt and has to be picked up the minute he crosses halfcourt. What also goes unnoticed is his finishes. Connelly is also starting to go inside and use his size. He had a couple of finishes where he made a move on the defender and went and slapped backboard for good measure. He scores in bunches, and his outside touch opens things up for Pro Skills. Day 1, he played well, he has to work on consistency, and that will put him in new categories.
Colton Gillingham Colton Gillingham 6'0" | CG Greeley West | 2021 State CO – Colorado Chaos
What is there not to like about Gillingham. He was maybe the most crafty finishers on the day as he made multiple layups that caught me by surprise. He would grab the rebound and go coast to coast for easy finishes. Gillingham was the best player for Chaos in the event as he averaged near 20 points a game. He shot the 3-ball, used his speed to get out on the break, and he also was scrappy, so he fought for rebounds and kept plays alive. Gillingham makes plays happen while he is on the floor; he passes to the open man and is a microwave option. I like Gillingham’s game and what he adds to a team.
Garrett Siebert Garrett Siebert 6'6" | PF Legend | 2021 CO — Colorado Hoops Academy
Siebert was undoubtedly the most animated player at the event. In the game against the Roughriders, he hit about four timely 3-pointers and screamed after every single shot to bring some energy to the team. His shot was on in almost every game, and he also used his 6’6 frame to mix it up inside as well. Siebert moves well and has a good feel for the game. He also battles on the defensive end and can defend multiple positions. On a team that does so many pick and rolls, it has to be nice to have a big that can step out and space the floor.
