Hoop City 17U would have been one of the best and one of the most exciting teams to watch on the Adidas circuit if a season could have taken place.
There was more-than-enough talent for Hoop City to win a lot of games over the summer.
Just for two days, I watched some of the best talent in the state of Tennessee and in the country.
Here are the players that stood out.
JD Davison
The 6-foot-3 point guard is a playmaker. That’s his strength. Each time Davison comes up the floor with the basketball in his hands, he’s looking for the open man. Davison is an unbelievable slasher and can shoot the 3. In Wednesday’s scrimmage, Davison had 34 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists in Hoop City Team Red’s 108-102 win over Hoop City Team Gray. The Alabama native is a force on the defensive end as well. Davison knows how to time himself going up for a block.
Skyy Clark
Davison and Clark would work great together in the backcourt. Davison is the playmaker, while Clark is simply a finisher. The 6-2 combo guard is very patient on the offensive end. Clark has solid ball handles and a nice shot release. Clark is a pretty good passer. He had seven assists in Wednesday’s scrimmage, along with 20 points on 9 of 17 shooting.
Daveonne Warfield
Warfield is one of the best shooters on this team. That’s what he does best. Warfield can’t be left open. In a scrimmage on Thursday, the shooting guard had 17 points on 6 of 12 shooting in the first half. Warfield still needs to work on taking better shots.
TJ Madlock
Madlock showed progression by knocking down outside shots. He was already a great slasher, solid finisher at the rim and solid defender. He made 6 of 8 shots from the field in the first half of Thursday’s scrimmage. Madlock is going to be a steal for a Division 1 program.
Mason Miller
Miller is very effective when he’s able to go left and pick his spots. The 6-8 ½ wing has a left-handed floater that seems to work for him 90 percent of the time. Miller can also stroke it from deep. He was able to pick his scoring spots on the court in two scrimmages. Miller went 5 for 9 from the field in the first half on Thursday.
Johnathan Lawson
Hoop City 17U could have been very flexible in the backcourt, thanks in part to Lawson, a 6-8 small forward that can play positions 1-4. Lawson is really effective in transition. In the two scrimmages this week, Lawson sprinted up the floor, either finishing with a layup or a dunk or a pass to a shooter in the corner. Lawson knows how to make the right pass. In other words, he knows how to play basketball. That’s why he’s one of the most coveted prospects in the 2021 class. In Wednesday’s scrimmage, Lawson finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. In the first half of Thursday’s scrimmage, he had 15 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.
Reese McMullen and Tadarius Jacobs
Both McMullen and Jacobs are great complimentary pieces for this team. Both players are natural scorers. McMullen is one of the best 3-point shooters in the 2021 class. Jacobs takes smart shots on every possession. His mid-range game is consistent.
Zander Yates Zander Yates 6'8" | SF Houston | 2021 State TN , 6-7 small forward, is also a solid piece for the team. He can pop out in pick-and-roll action and knock down 17-foot jump shots.
