At the #GrindSznKickoff, the wheels were in motion and the COVID-19 safety protocols were in place from Prep Hoops.
In looking at the 17U group, specifically the top shooters, here are some prospects that stood out to me on the weekend.
Hunter Parson | 5-11 | Oklahoma Hilldale/ABC Basketball White
Right from the jump, Hunter Parson was knocking down shots at a high clip for ABC Basketball White. He set his value from early on in Saturday’s afternoon tilt with Tulsa Hawks White. Parson had his team’s first 10 points which included back to back 3’s. His mid-range floater is a nice asset but it’s his outside shooting touch that makes him dangerous. Parson was also very sneaky on both ends as a rebounder and can push the tempo. He averaged a cool 20.3 PPG for the weekend.
Chad Milne | 6-6 | Oklahoma Allen/H&H Elite
It was hard to watch H&H Elite on Saturday and not be overly impressed by Chad Milne. The long versatile guard/wing can get it done in a variety of ways, but his lights out shooting from the mid-range and deep helped his side throughout the matchup against the North Florida Hurricanes. Not the quickest athlete, Milne is packed with IQ and fundamentals. His long arms and smooth release make it awfully tough for defenders to slow down his jumper. He was fun to watch.
Matt Thompson | 6-2 | Missouri Smith-Cotton/Missouri Flight
I quickly saw how Matt Thompson could make plays for his side often against Team FOE Elite. Stacked up against a team with a ton of size and pure athletes, he never shied away from the task ahead. Thompson came to put it all on the table and his outside shot was working for much of the game. He’s a hard-nosed guard who can get to the mid-range and also attack. Thompson’s shot is his top asset for sure.
Luke Abeln Luke Abeln 6'4" | SG Marceline | 2021 State MO | 6-4 | Missouri Marceline/Missouri Elite
In a Saturday matchup with Victory Ministry, Luke Abeln Luke Abeln 6'4" | SG Marceline | 2021 State MO performed very well as a touch shooter. He has nice size and his jumper is developed as can be. Abeln was showing off his leadership throughout the matchup and quite frankly was the top outside jump shooter in the game. He brings a leg up to any team’s offense with his keen 3-point shooting ability.
Jediah Jones | 6-2 | Oklahoma Union/Next Level Up
A highly gifted 3-point shooter, Jediah Jones represents a player who can run both guard spots and do it well. He’s versatile, athletic as can be and the one attribute that always stands out with him is his energy and long-term motor. Jones never seems tired or rattled at all as he moves onto the next play quickly. His outside shot was helping his squad on Saturday against the Texas Tar Heels. He is in for a big senior campaign.
Ke’lyjah Carter| 5-10 | Missouri Jefferson City/Missouri Elite
Another Missouri Elite guard made impressive plays as a shooter in Ke’lyjah Carter. A blazing guard who really can play on or off the ball, his jumper was working on the weekend, especially on Saturday against Victory Ministry. The corners are his favorite spot to put up a jumper and he’s able to help in a variety of ways, recording steals on the break and being a disruptor on defense. Carter has a solid guard game.
