LONG BEACH, CA—I felt the next time I’d be in a gym would be a surreal-like feeling—and that is exactly the case. Dinos Trigonis, who had been running events in Arizona, Utah, and Iowa—unveiled his first event in So-Cal—and it was quite good to say the least. From the playmaking abilities of Milos Uzan to an improved “big” in Henri Adiassa, the talent in the Class of 2022 was high-level.
Biggest Surprises
Henri Adiassa (Crossroads)
2022, C, 6-foot-10, 240 pounds
Adiassa has improved as much as any big in So CalJoel’s take: The biggest surprise of the event was the improvement of Adiassa. He showed marked improvement at both ends as a weakside shot blocker as well as a finisher on the block. His pivot work was solid and his drop step move was formidable as well. He still needs to do a better job not bringing the ball down and continue to improve his quickness while operating on the block.
Brandon Perez (Sherman Oaks/Notre Dame)
2022, PG, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s take: One of the better shooters of the day was Perez. His speed and quickness was solid in the open court, but it was his jump shot was what caught our eye. He gets good lift on his shot and his release is quick. He can lead the break and either snap a pass to an open teammate or stop on a dime and nail the mid-range pull jump shot. Overall, he was one of the more assertive guards at this event.
Benjie Nudo (San Diego/Del Norte)
2022, PG, 6-foot, 155 pounds
Joel’s take: “Moxie” is the first word that comes to mind when describing Nudo. From the tip off to the final buzzer, he was “buzzing” all over the court. He showed solid quickness, good speed, and just seemed to be a step ahead of many of the guards in the Top 40 Junior game. Defensively, he slid his feet well and had active hands. In transition, he tossed out some nice look-ahead passes and he cuts well in the half court offense.
Kristopher Krause (Bishop Montgomery)
2022, CG, 6-foot-3, 170 pounds
Joel’s take: Krause was one of the more intriguing guards at this event. He has nice frame with good length and he is a smooth athlete. His fundamental approach was on tap as well as he never got sped up with the dribble, made savvy decisons with the ball, and he showed he can score as well. He is definitely one to watch and it makes it more interesting because he plays for a high-profile coach in Doug Mitchell.
