We will take a look at what happened during the second half of June with these classes and what excitiement we have to look forward to next season and beyond.
Class of 2020
It might have taken a minute but Crescent City has followed in the footsteps of Peabody and Alexandria High this spring and summer with four of more seniors moving on to the next level. Headlining the Crescent City crew was the commitment of Byron Joshua Byron Joshua 5'10" | PG Crescent City | 2020 State LA to Alcorn State in Lorman, Mississippi. Keane Smith will attend HBCU Jarvis Christian College while Jordin Farrell Jordin Farrell 6'2" | SG Crecent City | 2020 State LA will take his skill set to Chipola College in Florida. The commitments of these players, not only at Crescent City, but Peabody and ASH as well, show that these championship teams were chalk full of talent. It also displays that Louisiana is not just a “football state” and that they have guys who can play at the next level as well.
Class of 2021
The class of 2021 has set off some fireworks (pun intended) over the past couple of weeks. Three of the top ten players in the state have committed to various universities to join UL-Lafayette commit Joe Charles (6’7″, Carencro). Prep Hoops LA second rated player, Carlos Stewart (6’1″/Dunham), committed to play for Herb Sendek and the Santa Clara Broncos early last month. He was followed by Jamond Vincent Jamond Vincent 6'2" | SG Landry-Walker | 2021 State LA (6’2″, #7 ranked) of Landry-Walker committing to the University of New Orleans and Keon Coleman Keon Coleman 6'4" | SG Opelousas Catholic | 2021 State LA (6’4″, #9 ranked) of Opelousas Catholic committing to Kansas. Coleman will attempt to follow the shoes of players like Julius Peppers (UNC) and Donovan McNabb (Syracuse) who played both football and basketball at the Division I level.
Class of 2022
Offers galore were made to the top players in the 2022 class last month. Percy Daniels Percy Daniels 6'8" | PF Madison Prep | 2022 State LA (6’9″, Madison Prep), Prep Hoops LA top rated player, received one of the biggest offers from Will Wade and LSU. The second rated player, Labree Williams Labree Williams 6'6" | SF Calvary Baptist | 2023 #186 Nation FL (6’5″, Calvary Baptist) received offers from UAB and the University of Houston to go along with his previous offer from ULM. Kyran Ratliff (6’7″, KIPP BTW) also received an offer from U of H along with offers from UNO and Tulane. Ratliff, Prep Hoops third rated player, had also received an offer from Arkansas during the season. Ellender’s Dionjahe Thomas Dionjahe Thomas 6'8" | PF Ellender | 2022 TX (6’8″) was another player who received numerous offers. UNO, UL-Lafayette, and three other Louisiana schools offered the high flying forward from Houma.
Huntington’s Rayshun McCullar Rayshun McCullar 6'1" | PG Huntington | 2022 State LA (6’1″) was the high on the list of several schools last month. Among his offers were the SMU Mustangs, the UL Ragin’ Cajuns, and the Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech. UL-Lafayette was not finished as they were one of four state schools that offered Carver wing Dorian Finister Dorian Finister 6'5" | CG Carver | 2022 State #173 Nation LA (6’5″) scholarships. Tulane and Southern made offers to Carver teammate, Solomon Washington Solomon Washington 6'7" | SF Carver | 2022 State #127 Nation LA (6’7″). These offers, along with players like John-Paul Ricks John-Paul Ricks 6'0" | PG Jehovah-Jireh | 2022 State #206 Nation LA (Jehovah-Jireh) and Martin Mcdowell Martin Mcdowell 5'10" | PG Calvary Baptist Academy | 2022 State LA (Calvary Baptist) receiving interest from state and national schools, displays that the 2022 is as deep and talented as they come in Louisiana.
Class 2023
Two studs of the freshman class received a plethora of offers during the month of June. Tyler Ringgold Tyler Ringgold 6'7" | SF Legacy Early College | 2023 State SC (6’7″) or Southern Lab received two Power 5 offers in Texas A&M and Ole Miss to go along with offers from Grambling and Houston. Chris Lockett Chris Lockett 6'5" | CG Isidore Newman | 2023 State #180 Nation LA (who will probably be the top player in 2023 when rankings become available) received offers from the Tigers of LSU and Grambling. He also received offers from Georgetown, Wichita State, Oklahoma State, and Memphis. Both of these players will be highly sought after as their prep careers go on.
These four classes clearly state that Louisiana is a player on the basketball scene as it regards to talent. The talent is spread amongst the state and not in one central location. We will see how things shake out as more schools and coaches get a chance to see these players once the corona virus is corralled in the United States.
