Grassroots events have largely gotten underway in some parts of the country while others are still on hold. A lot of players have been missing out on a time when they’d usually have ample opportunities to showcase their game for college coaches.
With events still pretty much on hold here in California, I’ve used the time to watch film on players that I haven’t quite watched in depth before. Here’s a group of players from the Class of 2022 that I’ve seen through film that could be players to look out for this upcoming season. I’ll have more groupings of players throughout this month.
1. Khamani Nelson Khamani Nelson 6'6" | PF Gardena Serra | 2022 State CA-S – Serra (Gardena)
One of the biggest things that stood out to me about Nelson when watching film is his ability to play in the high post. He has good awareness and vision and he looks for his bigs or cutters around the rim. He can make a proper post entry pass and find his bigs for easy baskets. He has good length and versatility; can handle the ball and run the floor and can operate in the low post. Soft touch around the rim.
2. Roddie Anderson Roddie Anderson 6'1" | PG Fountain Valley | 2022 State CA-S – Fountain Valley
Anderson excels in transition. He is very quick and gets out on the fast break ahead of the defense. He sprints down court and is ready to catch a pass, or he can handle the ball and go length of the court himself. Active defender who gambles sometimes on steals, but can create offense with his defense. Strong finisher at the rim; can finish around contact.
3. Chance Stephens Chance Stephens 6'2" | SG Riverside Poly | 2022 State CA-S – Riverside Poly
Stephens is a lights-out shooter from three-point range. He has a very quick release and is close to automatic when left open. He moves very well without the ball to get himself open on the perimeter. Uses fakes to get his defender to fly past him. He can shoot with defenders rushing at him. Can also put the ball on the floor and knock down jumpers in transition. Nice pull-up game.
4. Cord Stansberry Cord Stansberry 6'3" | SG Shadow Hills | 2022 State CA-S – Shadow Hills
Stansberry has picked up a couple of Division 1 offers during this time period and he appears to be one of the fastest rising prospects in his class. He is in the mold of a big point guard who can take advantage of smaller guards. He dribbles with his head up and is always looking for his teammates in the halfcourt and in transition. Crafty passer. Good shooter from distance.
5 Elijah Price Elijah Price 6'8" | PF St. Anthony | 2022 State CA-S – St Anthony.
Price is a very intriguing prospect. He has good length and size and has all the tools to develop into a versatile forward. He’s a relentless worker on the boards and deceptively strong. He can finish strong in traffic. He’s active defensively; contests well and acts as a rim protector. He has good footwork in the post; takes his time and is decisive.
