Grassroots events have largely gotten underway in some parts of the country while others are still on hold. A lot of players have been missing out on a time when they’d usually have ample opportunities to showcase their game for college coaches.
With events still pretty much on hold here in California, I’ve used the time to watch film on players that I haven’t quite watched in depth before. Here’s a group of players from the Class of 2022 that I’ve seen through film that could be players to look out for this upcoming season. I’ll have more groupings of players throughout this month.
1. Ramsey Huff Ramsey Huff 6'1" | CG Corona Centennial | 2022 State CA-S – Corona Centennial
Huff has an explosive first step off the dribble. He’s quick in the open court and can handle the ball length of the floor. In halfcourt sets, he can easily beat his defender off the dribble and can finish strong at the rim. Great catch and shoot player with a solid midrange game. Aggressive defender on the wing who pressures the ball in the backcourt. Creates scoring opportunities with his defense.
2. Jake Herbele – Santa Margarita
What stood out to me the most watching film on Herbele is his ability to move without the ball. He’s constantly in motion; rarely stagnant. He’s a good three-point shooter who utilizes flare screens to get himself open. He’s also solid in the pick and pop as the shooter after setting the screen. At times, can use fakes at the three-point line to get his defender in the air and make a move to the rim.
3. Rob Diaz – Millikan
A lefty shooter, Diaz can finish with either hand around the rim. He can put the ball on the floor and attack off the bounce. He does a lot of work from midrange and he has a solid looking step back jumper. He can handle the ball in transition and can knock down pull-up jumpers. He’s got unlimited range and can routinely knock down shots beyond the HS three-point line.
4. Jermaine Rogers – Ayala
Rogers had a solid sophomore year and was named to the Palomares All-League second team. When watching film, Rogers was very impressive on the defensive end of the court. He has quick hands and contests shots well. He stays on his feet and keeps up with the player he’s guarding. Has the tools to be a lockdown defender. Offensively, he can shoot the ball and he gets out in transition as a finisher.
5. Buckley DeJardin Buckley DeJardin 6'3" | SG St. Francis | 2022 State CA-S – St. Francis
DeJardin is an active player around the rim. He moves very well without the ball and makes strong cuts along the baseline. He has good hands; catches passes well and finishes around the rim. He’s a good rebounder, hard-working especially on the offensive end to clean up missed shots. Has some range the extends out the three-point line.
