Grassroots events have largely gotten underway in some parts of the country while others are still on hold. A lot of players have been missing out on a time when they’d usually have ample opportunities to showcase their game for college coaches.
With events still pretty much on hold here in California, I’ve used the time to watch film on players that I haven’t quite watched in depth before. Here’s a group of players from the Class of 2021 that I’ve seen through film that could be players to look out for this upcoming season. I’ll have more groupings of players throughout this month.
1. Devin Lewis Devin Lewis 6'4" | SF Los Altos | 2021 State CA-S – Los Altos
Lewis is a versatile forward who can excel in smaller ball lineups. His ability to stretch the floor and shoot from the three-point line can cause problems for opponent defenses. He can get out on the break and finish at the rim. He’s strong and can absorb contact from defenders while finishing the play. Can finish with either hand around the rim. Moves well without the ball to get open looks from three.
2. MoMo Stokes MoMo Stokes 5'9" | PG Bonita Vista | 2021 State CA-S – Bonita Vista
Stokes is a knock down shooter from the outside. He can hit pull-up threes or get himself open in the halfcourt. Utilizes screens well; if the defender goes under the screen, he’s knocking down that shot. Has a killer midrange game. Comes off screens or shoots off the dribble. He can get to the rim and he has a nice littler runner. He uses the glass when near the rim.
3. Diego Campisano Diego Campisano 6'5" | SF Torrey Pines | 2021 State CA-S – Torrey Pines
When watching film, one of the things that stood out the most to me about Campisano was his awareness and vision when playing the post. He knows how to pass out of the post when swarmed by the defense and he can find cutters around the rim and in the dunker spot. Good footwork and spins in the paint. Solid rebounder. He can shoot from the outside.
4. Donovan Watkins Donovan Watkins 5'8" | PG Corona Centennial | 2021 State CA-S – Corona Centennial
Watkins’ quickness is a sight to see. He can turn the corner in a blur. He beats his defender off the dribble easily and can get to the rim before the help has time to react. Athletic and can finish around shot blockers in the paint. Very efficient in transition; can go length of the court himself or find teammates running with him on the break.
5. Quincy Bentley Quincy Bentley 6'2" | CG Newbury Park | 2021 State CA-S – Newbury Park
Bentley is a great shooter who can create his own shot. Can lull the defense to sleep with a couple of dribbles, then rise up and hit a midrange jumper. Also shoots well from the three-point line. Can spot up and shoot or let it fly with a defender rushing at him. Uses screens well; comes off the pick and knocks down the shot. He’s crafty around the rim and can finish around the defense.
