I ventured out to LakePoint’s immense sports complex and their “basketball dome” of sorts, to see his 17U’s work out and then scrimmage Smithson Basketball Training’s own 17U bunch.
Some standouts for SEBA:
LePra George (Sprayberry, 2021, PG) – A true push the pace point guard, George has no lower gear, he gets the outlet and goes with impressive pace and determination, he lived mostly under the radar last year as Sprayberry went through a tough campaign, but this summer next-level programs will get a good look at the long 6-2 senior-to-be’s smooth handle, fearless driving and solid outside shooting, that pace can get away from him at times ’over-driving’ into traffic, but the edgy confidence, high ceiling and eye-catching athletic talent breaking down defenses is hard to miss.
Jordan James (Kennesaw Mountain, 2021, CG) – There wasn’t much that James didn’t do well on the night, a true-combo guard (but more adept at the 2) in that he’s got all the physicality to bull his way to the hoop at a solid 6-3 but can pull his unorthodox-looking J with high proficiency all the way out past the arc, he’s a heady passer, really good on-ball defender and an exceptional rebounding guard due to that big body, like George carries an edge and moxie which he uses to deflate opponents, he’s part of a good-looking 2-headed guard monster for the Mustangs.
Nick Hein (Kennesaw Mountain, 2021, CG) – Part 2 of that 2-headed monster is the 6-3 Hein, another physical specimen who looks like a college QB that can do it all from the wing or with a polished handle out top at the point, he gets out on the break and fills the lane like few I’ve seen this summer, and after beating you to the hole a few times he pulls a long 3 to make it worse for you, he showed great instincts on D and in tandem with George and James this summer makes for a devastating, in-your-face, trio of downhill pace kings who just want to go through you.
Decameron Porter Decameron Porter 6'6" | SF Lafayette | 2021 State GA (Lafayette, 2021, SF) – The 6-6 Porter had just joined the club a few days before I saw him and was nursing a bothersome ankle, so we didn’t get to see him pour it on like his reputation from the Ramblers’ 25-3 season last winter, but his size and movement (even with the ankle) were noticeable, during the run-through before the scrimmage I saw great leaping ability and a nice intermediate jumper, it’ll be fascinating to see him integrated together with the above 3 guards and watch him get healthy and prosper in LoPresti’s terrific program.
