While I wasn’t able to be in the gym physically, thanks to Baller TV I had a front row seat for the game. The contest featured several high quality prospects, in both the class of 2021 and 2022. It was a back and forth hard fought battle that went into overtime on the strength of a late 3 by Josh O’Garro of the Cali Stars. That 3 was all the momentum needed to propel the Stars to a two point victory. Here is a look at my takeaways from the game.
(1) Max Lewis has terrific inside and outside ability.
Lewis has come a long way from his days at Somerset Losee. The 6’6 wing used his quick 2nd jump ability to grab rebounds and score in the paint. While he was effective down low, what he really loved to do was face up and knock down jumpers. The rangy wing made several face up 3’s and showed the ability to separate behind the line and get his shot off using 1 dribble or less.
(2) Glenn Taylor Glenn Taylor 6'5" | SF AZ Compass Prep | 2021 State #162 Nation AZ has improved as a shooter
This isn’t to say he couldn’t shoot before, he was just known more for his driving and playmaking ability. In the Cali Stars game however Taylor showed the ability to be a devastating floor spacer. Playing off the ball, he was able to knock down multiple 3’s including several early in the game to help Dream Vision jump out to an early lead. If he continues to shoot it like this, to go along with his handling and facilitating ability, his stock is going to continue to rise on a national level.
(3) Scotty Washington is one tough competitor.
Scotty Wash is quickly becoming one of my favorite players to watch. A lot of players can play well early in the game, but Washington seems to raise his play to equal the stakes. He was terrific, especially in the 2nd half where he drove the lane, knocked down 3’s and made several winning plays for his squad.
(4) Los being Los.
I’ve seen Milos Uzan Milos Uzan 6'4" | PG Dream City Christian | 2022 State #60 Nation AZ play so much over the last 12 months, that nothing he does surprises me. He was his usual efficient self against DV. Displayed a smooth handle, and terrific finishing ability. My favorite move was his left to right cross over from the top of the key that he finished with a right hand runner. In addition to his handles he let everyone know that he could shoot the ball, knocking down several 3’s in catch and shoot situations.
(5) Corey Cofield is a big time sleeper.
If you don’t know you better ask somebody. Coefield was tremendous. The 6’5 wing showed off his entire repertoire He scored in transition, got to the line, made free throws and knocked down shots. For my money, he was the best overall player on the floor for that game and he carried the Stars for stretches of the first half. Currently ranked #29 in our So Cal c/o 2021 rankings, he played hard, and smart, and if he continues to put together performances like this, I certainly expect his stock to rise.
