There are multiple teams in this district ready to make a run at the state tournament this year. Continue reading for Part 1 of my breakdown of each 4A team in District IV.
Burley Bobcats: The Bobcats look forward to another productive season in 2020-21 after finishing last season with a conference record of 10-4 and an overall record of 15-8. Under head coach Trent Whiting, Burley will look to their roster full of varsity experience with lots of seniors in the upcoming season. I fully expect Burley to make a big run in the district tournament before proving themselves as contenders at the state tournament. The Bobcats will be lead by McCray Mort, a talented guard with great hands on defense and the ability to knock down an open jumper, and Jarrett Orthman, a 6’1″ shooting guard with a great catch-and-shoot jumper who always has his feet set to knock down the next 3-pointer.
Canyon Ridge Riverhawks: Canyon Ridge finished last season with an overall record of 10-12 and a conference record of 5-8 under head coach Darren Van Hofwegen. The Riverhawks will look to improve upon last season to climb the district ladder and attempt to secure their spot in the state tournament. Though Canyon Ridge has struggled in past seasons, the 2020-21 season provides a great opportunity for the Riverhawks to capitalize against other teams in the district who are losing lots of seniors. I expect Canyon Ridge to have a great season once they find their best rotation and continue to compete.
Jerome Tigers: The Tigers will look to improve this season after finishing last in their conference with an overall record of 4-17 and a conference record of 2-11 under head coach Joe Messick. Jerome will look to their underclassmen with varsity experience to take over and use their experience to guide the rest of the team. The Tigers will look to push the ball in transition and score in bunches to defeat their opponents. Watch for Mikey Lloyd, a 6’3″ shooting guard from the class of 2022 with a quick release and the ability to get hot in a hurry, to lead the way for the Tigers.
Minico Spartans: After finishing the 2019-20 season with an overall record of 19-8 and a conference record of 9-4, the Spartans will look to make a push in the 2020-21 season for a run at the state title. Head coach Brady Trenkle will attempt to bring the Spartans back to the state tournament with the hopes of competing for the state championship this year. The Spartans will have an almost entirely new roster this season, only returning a few players. Look for Brevin Trenkle Brevin Trenkle 6'0" | PG Minico | 2023 State ID , a guard from the class of 2023 with the mind that only a coach’s son can have, as he looks to lead the new-look Spartans this season.
