Continue ReadingThroughout our travels to different gyms, we see a large number of basketball players. However, there are some players that I, and the other scouts and contributors, miss. In this edition of Unranked, I will take a look at five players who were missed during the season but will definitely be on our radar in the future.
Chavez Brown | 6’2″ | Terrebonne | 2021
Brown is one of the many dual sport athletes that Louisiana possesses. Along with being a good wideout, Brown is a good basketball player. He super athletic and runs the floor like a track star. His ability to run the floor and finish is really next level for his height. In addition to his open court exploits, he is very good on the blocks. Brown is a ferocious offensive rebounder and has outstanding footwork. Scoring is not an issue for Brown. Improving his face up game will make Brown just as effective on the court as he is on the gridiron.
Antonio Coleman, Jr. | 6’3″ | Minden | 2022
Coleman was a key contributor on the Crimson Tide team this season which resulted in an all-parish (Webster) honorable mention nod. His game is one that depends on athleticism and he has plenty of it. Coleman changes ends quickly and has the ability to finish with either hand at the rim. He also has some serious spring and can dunk on opponents in a moments notice. Coleman has a fluid set shot from behind the arc that he makes consistently. Look for Coleman to be the focal point in what Coach Bailey decides to run next season.
Jaterrius Fusiler | 6’2″ | New Iberia | 2021
Fusiler may end up being one of the best two way players in the state by the time the 2020-21 season is over. When I see him on film, he is one of the better defenders I have seen in the last three years. He is very good at playing help side defense and better than average at playing passing lanes. His ability to jump into passing lanes leads to open court opportunities where he flushes the ball home emphatically. Fusiler can penetrate like a top level guard as well. His ability to guard and score will place him in a select group going into this next season.
Jonquarius McGhee | 6’2″ | Opelousas | 2021
McGhee has the ability to be a top twenty player by the time his career is done at Opelousas. He is an uber-atheltic point guard who can drive through the lane and dunk on a player or find wing shooters. McGhee is very good with his handle as well. He stays low when dribbling and has great balance. This allows him to get by defenders and penetrate from various angles. McGhee can score and all levels, finish above the rim, and find others. He checks all the marks of a combo guard with good point guard skills. He will definitely be a player to watch next year.
Kevin Wiltz | 6’1″ | Opelousas Catholic | 2022
Wiltz is another dual sport athlete who excels on the basketball court. From the film I have seen, he is a guard who likes to push tempo and play in the open floor. Wiltz changes ends swiftly and puts defenses on their heels. He either finishes at the cup or uses a floater upon entering the paint. On defense, he has a knack for blocking shots of offensive players attempting to make layups. He comes out of nowhere to block their shot. His athleticism is surprising in that sense. I will be shocked if he is not an all-district first teamer in the near future.
Unranked has often highlighted players around the state who have flourished on the floor but have gone largely unnoticed. Jalen Brooks (Woodlawn-Shreveport/Southern Arkansas) comes to mind when I think of unranked players who went on to accomplish big things. Look for these players, and others, to be impact unranked players as well.
