Their presence on the floor has value in and of itself. They impact the game in so many ways, especially at the high school level since many schools don’t have a true big man.
With that in mind, here are a few of the best bigs I’ve seen in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Duncan Powell Duncan Powell 6'7" | PF DeSoto | 2021 State #128 Nation TX – 2021 6’7’’ Forward DeSoto HS – Powell is the epitome of a prospect who can do it all. He is as dynamic as they come. He has the strength and build to bang down low as well as the athleticism and shot-making ability to operate on the wing. He can even handle the ball and initiate the offense. The soon-to-be senior is a versatile defender too with a knack for affecting shots.
Chrisdon Morgan Chrisdon Morgan 6'7" | PF Lancaster | 2021 State TX – 2021 6’8’’ Power Forward/Center DeSoto HS – Morgan is a more traditional post player, making him the perfect foil to Powell. He rebounds well at both ends and is good about following his shots. He can also finish lobs at the rim. Defensively, Morgan is solid shot blocker who knows how to time his jumps and utilize his length.
Gannon Parker – 2021 6’7’’ Power Forward/Center Richardson HS – Parker is a big bodied prospect who isn’t afraid to throw his weight around down low. He excels at finding and exploiting mismatches on offense. Parker’s footwork in the post and skill as an interior passer are noticeable as well. He may not be the star of his team, but he understands his role and does everything that is asked of him.
Connor Redrow Connor Redrow 6'10" | C Prestonwood Christian | 2021 State TX – 2021 6’10’’ Center Prestonwood Christian Academy – Redrow’s size alone makes him a difficult player to match up with. He is deceptively athletic for a player of his height. He moves fluidly in the open court and can even stretch out for the occasional jumper. PCA’s big man also possesses a soft touch in the paint. Defensively, Redrow is a stellar rebounder and rim protector. There are very few players in Texas that can challenge him at either end.
Cale Martens – 2021 6’7’’ Power Forward Flower Mound Marcus HS – Martens is a rebounding machine. He is relentless on the boards. He high-points the ball like a receiver. He has a nice touch inside and goes up decisively when he gets the ball. Additionally, Martens has an incredibly high motor. His teammates feed of his energy. If he is on the court, he is going to give you everything he has and then some.
Cameron Corhen Cameron Corhen 6'9" | C Sunrise Christian | 2022 #106 Nation KS – 2022 6’10’’ Power Forward/Center John Paul II HS – Although he is still a bit raw, Corhen has a huge amount of upside. He didn’t get a lot of minutes as a sophomore, likely due to inexperience, but he will almost certainly operate in an increased role as a junior now that he has a full season of varsity ball under his belt. He is great at establishing himself down low and lurks around the rim, which results in a ton of offensive rebounds and putbacks. I can’t wait to see what he does with more opportunities as an upperclassman.
Cameron Barnes Cameron Barnes 6'10" | C Duncanville | 2023 State #128 Nation TX – 2023 6’10’’ Power Forward/Center Duncanville HS – When the high school season rolls around, Duncanville will once again be loaded from top to bottom with talented prospects at every position. Barnes is one of them. He has a long and wiry frame. His measurables are tremendous. He is skilled enough to hit jumpers and athletic enough to get past defenders and score at the rim. His slight build is the one thing people knock him for, but he has more than enough time to add some bulk and get in the weight room.
