This season could be one of the better groups of prospects the region has had in a while with multiple schools from the city loaded with college prospects! We dive into the Battle for Springfield here looking at what each have for the 2020-2021 season!
Springfield
Springfield High School could have one of its strongest teams in recent memory. They are headlined by a trio of 2021 prospects that will all play at the college level. At the point guard spot Shane Miller is a smooth lead guard that can score and dish. Bennie Slater has emerged after a breakout junior campaign as their top prospect. The 6’5” small forward has long arms and is a playmaker with the ball in his hands. Plus passer and shoots it well from mid-range. Tyvin Garrison is a wiry power forward with athleticism. Bouncy around the hoop and really improved his face up jumper over the last year.
Springfield Lanphier
Coach Blake Turner always has a loaded squad at Lanphier with tons of quality guards. Next year’s team will be no exception. Class of 2022 shooting guard Tye Banks and 2023 point guard Tevonta Jackson are considered two of the of the top guards in their classes. Banks is a strong bodied two guard that can score from multiple levels. Jackson plays with a ton of speed and can make plays for himself and others. 2021s TJ Price and Michael Ousley are primed to take on bigger roles. Mekhi Phillips is a dynamic point guard in 2022. Those five guards will have one of the best big men in southern Illinois to throw the ball too. KJ Debrick is a big time shot blocking presence and rebounder who improved as an offensive threat throughout his junior year.
Springfield Southeast
Southeast had a bit of a down year last season after two stellar campaigns. We fully expect them to bounce back in a major way this season. They are led by top 20 2021 prospect James Dent. The shooting guard has a long and wiry frame with a feathery jump shot. One of premier snipers in the state from three. Kamran Banks brings production from the two guard spot. Crafty guard gets the most out of his ability. Omar Rahim is another name to watch in 2022.
Sacred Heart Griffin
They will graduate the talented Kyle Ingram Kyle Ingram 6'7" | PF Sacred Heart Griffin | 2020 State IL who had a breakout senior campaign, but SHG should be really good again next season. Top 25 2023 Jake Hamilton Jake Hamilton 6'3" | SG Sacred Heart Griffin | 2023 State IL emerged during his freshman season to be one of the best in central Illinois. He is crafty in the lane being able to finish with either hand at the cup. Andrew Schluter is a left handed wing that can slash to the rim and is a quality defender.
