You might not be able to find their hometown on a map, but that hasn’t stopped them from making a name for themselves and now jumping onto our radars. Next up, we have 2A guards from the 2022 class to keep an eye on.
Dakota Eaton – Holly
Holly was one of the surprise standout teams this season for District 6. They finished with a 19-5 record and the player that had them in positions to win almost every single time out was their lead guard Dakota Eaton. Eaton did a bit of everything this year on the gridiron as this multi-sport athlete led the team in points at 13.7 points a game but also knew where to be and that led to 5.3 boards a game. Eaton is a true point guard that got teammates involved despite being who the team needed to score as he dished out three assists a game, and his team-high 3.2 steals a game was not too shabby either. Eaton played well this season as only a sophomore, junior year should be even better.
Erik Wasinger – Crested Butte
Crested Butte leaned on their sophomore guard to lead the way, and he came through for them more often than not. The 5’11 guard put up big numbers to win the South Peaks league and showcased his ability to score in every way. Wasinger averaged a team-high 16.2 points and also helped in other ways. He is a hard worker on the boards that crashes (4.2 rebounds), gets others involved when he doesn’t get an open look, and also played the passing lanes well as he averaged 2.8 steals a game. Wasinger is a player that I will make sure that I follow this upcoming season and deserves more credit.
Evan Sehnert – Mancos
Sehnert is a 5’9 point guard that was asked to do a lot for Mancos and did it. He was the floor general for one of the top teams in 2A last season that went 19-4 overall and turned a few heads. Sehnert used his high IQ to get past defenders and also was one of the best shooters on the entire team, which helped space the floor. Sehnert hit 44 3-pointers on the season at a 40% clip and also rebounded well for his size. He averaged four boards a game and had 2.3 steals to go along with it. With his confidence high and the team chemistry building, Mancos is set up for another stellar season.
Ethan Johnson – Holyoke
Johnson is 6’0 combo-guard that plays on both ends of the court. He is a high energy player that scores in bunches, and once he found his rhythm, he was able to provide some wins for a young Holyoke bunch. Johnson hit 42 3-pointers on the season at 37% from beyond the arc. He also made it a point to get into the paint and find his teammates as well. On the year he averaged 11.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, three assists and just under 2.5 steals a game as only a sophomore. It is only up from here.
Adani Hassan – Lotus School for Excellence
Lotus School for Excellence sounds like a fantastic place to send a young scholar, I’ve never heard of it though. On the year, the basketball team was up and down but did get a win over a talented Denver Waldorf school. The team’s best player and leading scorer was their young captain Adani Hassan. Hassan is a small point guard that was creative enough to find ways to score. Hassan led the teams in points, steals, and assists at 11.4 ppg, 3.3 assists, and an impressive 3.5 spg. If he can pick up those kinds of numbers while also getting some help along the way, then LSE is in good hands and can bounce back next season.
