You might not be able to find their hometown on a map, but that hasn’t stopped them from making a name for themselves and now jumping onto our radars. First up, we have 2A guards from the 2021 class to keep an eye on.
Trey Summers – Union County Prep
Union County was a middle of the pack team that made sure to get their junior captain involved and rode him to the finish line. Summers was the leading scorer in all of 2A as the combo-guard put up 21.4 points a game and also got it done in other ways. Summers crashed the boards as one of the top rebounding (8.7 boards a game) guards and also picked up 3.7 steals a game in which he turned into points. Summers is poised for a big senior season, and Union County Prep will be a team to watch.
Christian Still – Dayspring Christian School
Christian Still is a tough shot taker, but a tough shot maker. Still is a 6’3 guard that gets to where he wants on the floor and makes the opposing team pay. He did not have to shoot the ball much as he attacked the rim and could not be contained. In Still’s junior season, he put up 20 points a game and also grabbed six boards a game. The Eagles have a young bunch that started playing well at the end of the season, and once Still found a rhythm, he did not look back. Next season he should pick up where he left off.
Jase Bessire Jase Bessire 6'0" | CG Highland | 2021 State CO – Highland (Ault)
Bessire is a player that we do know as he just made a Prep Hoops ranking debut for the state. He made a name for himself this season as he was a 2A First-Team All-State member alongside his brother and had one of the most balanced statlines in the entire class putting up 19.0 points a game and had six boards, five steals, and four and a half assists to go along with it. Bessire was a two-way player that recorded over 20 points in nine straight games, and his Highland team shocked many this year as they finished off the year with a 24-1 record. Make sure that you check him out if you get the chance.
Val Leone – Fowler
Val Leone is another player that has slipped under the radar, but this season had a coming-out party. Leone averaged 18.2 points a game for a Fowler team that went 22-3, and this big 6’3 guard and Leone was the reason they were so successful. Leone does it all but is a natural scorer that can score inside and out. He knocked down 44 3-pointers this season, rebounded extremely well at (7.3 boards a game), and also got others involved. Leone made the All-State 1st Team for Fowler and will be looking to build on another strong year. The first game of the season should be a fun one as he will break the 1,000 points scored mark in the first half. That should set the tone for the rest of the season as he continues to build.
Camden Smithburg Camden Smithburg 6'0" | PG Limon | 2021 State CO – Limon
Everyone in the state of Colorado has heard of the city Limon, or at least saw it on the highway, not many know where it is. Limon high school’s starting point guard, Smithburg is another First Team All-State Member in 2A and with good reason. Smithburg was one of the best scorers in the entire state as he showed that he could get it done both inside of the paint and also knock down shots as well. Smithburg hit 58 3-pointers this season, which opened up the defense, and then he attacked the rim as a creative finisher. There are not many shots that he doesn’t like and will figure out a way to score as seen by his 16.8 points a game last season. Smithburg is a terrific scorer but also a hard-nosed defender whose scrappiness gives him the edge. Big year upcoming for him.
