Recruiting Report: Kwame Evans Jr. (2023)
It seems like with every passing year we’re fortunate to welcome a talented crop of freshman to the high school scene. The 2023 class in particular showcased that it’s equipped with highly skilled prospects who will have a plethora of choices to make in terms of their future before graduating high school. One of those players is Poly wing Kwame Evans Kwame Evans 6'9" | SF Montverde | 2023 State #20 Nation FL Jr.
Evans has the size and length that every coach dreams of having in their incoming freshman. Standing a legitimate 6-foot-8 (and still growing) with freakish length and a smooth left-handed jumper, Evans wasted no time showing he is one of the top freshman you’ll find in the country. ESPN recently released their 2023 player rankings and Evans can be found no. 7 on said list.
“It was a goal of mine that I set for myself to be a top freshman,” Evans continued, “but I’m not letting it keep me from working hard. I want to move up that list and just keep getting better every year.”
If there were any doubts about his game midway through the 2019-20 season, Evans erased those doubts emphatically as he scored 18 points in Poly’s monumental win over IMG Academy. It wasn’t Evans’ only big time outing, but considering IMG was ranked as a top program nationally, it resonated and helped the Engineers cement themselves as a top 25 team.
Evans’ height and length aren’t the only thing that catch your eye, it’s the versatility and skillset combined that makes his potential seem limitless. He played alongside three Division I prospects this season in Justin Lewis Justin Lewis 6'8" | PF Baltimore Poly | 2020 State #49 Nation MD (Marquette), Rahim Ali Rahim Ali 5'11" | PG Baltimore Poly | 2020 State MD (Howard) and Brandon Murray Brandon Murray 6'5" | SG IMG Academy | 2021 #220 Nation FL (IMG Academy). While there were a few opportunities for Evans to reveal his true versatility, he’ll be able to do so consistently next season as he steps into a bigger role.
As his game on the floor develops, so does his overall physique off the floor. A prospect with Evans’ size and length usually take longer to feel comfortable in their body. His coordination and flexibility are already ahead of the curve. He’s been training with Kyle Jakobe, owner of Sweat Performance and trainer of dozes of pro athletes in the NFL and NBA. Jakobe raves about the small technical things that eventually becoming imperative in order to perform at a high level and Evans checks many boxes already.
College programs have already jumped on board with Evans, who finished his freshman year with a 3.7 GPA. Auburn, DePaul, Georgetown, George Washington, San Diego St., St. John’s, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech have all offered.
