Recruiting Report: Gabe Dorsey (2021)
Size and shooting are at a premium in today’s game and a great example of that is 2021 shooting guard Gabe Dorsey Gabe Dorsey 6'6" | SF The Hill School | 2021 State #134 Nation PA . Dorsey is a 6-foot-6 lefty who grew in height and put on strength steadily throughout his high school career. Now as he approaches his senior season at The Hill School, he boasts 16 total offers and has had a plethora of high majors burst onto the scene within the past calendar year. Dorsey had a big junior season where he continued to showcase his elite shot from three, his versatility as a defender to guard positions 1-4 and a willingness to do the little things that help his team win but may no show up in the box score.
“We had a great season as a team and as for me, I broke some school records like three-point makes,” Hill continued, “I think I showed people that I expanded my game off the dribble by getting into the lane and finishing floaters and stuff.”
Teams that played against Hill went into it knowing that Dorsey was a lethal shooter. He played that to his advantage by using a shot fake on the catch and would follow up with either one-dribble pull ups or as he referred to, getting into the lane to finish with soft touch.
While the offensive end continues to hold weight in today’s game, being versatile on the other end is becoming just as valuable. Since he was a freshman, Dorsey believes it’s that part of his game that has developed the most.
“It’s definitely been my defense and just showing that I can guard multiple positions,” Dorsey told Prep Hoops. “I’m still working to show that I can even guard power forwards and play strong with guys in the paint if that’s what is needed.”
His older brother and Penn State commit, Caleb, has a lot to do with Gabe being used to guarding bigger, more physical players. The two have different playing styles, and while Caleb is a capable shot-maker, he’s good at using his strong frame and bullying his defender to the rim.
As Gabe eyes his recruitment closely, Penn State is a program that is sticking out. The Nittany Lions offered him last July and join others such as Harvard, Providence, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Xavier as the core group that are sticking out to Dorsey at this point.
Prospects visiting campus is still a variable that remains up in the air with the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, but Dorsey told me he would like to a chance to do so before making his final decision. For now, he’ll suit up for Team Durant 17U as they look to participate in a few independent events around the country.
