Our last viewing of Andre was in early March in the Hopkins playoff game against Wayzata. This is what we saw:
“Areas of growth that I have seen from Andre this year include defensive consistencies and his abilities using his strength to attack opponents for attempts. Hopkins has a lot of good basketball players on their roster so if you are on the floor in the final minutes that means you are a trusted player and in the close games we have seen Andre is right there on the floor competing. His first step is explosive and often teams have to defend Andre with a player not as strong so once he gets the angle to the rim chances are strong he is producing with a balanced finish.”
Gray is dedicated to doing whatever he can to improve, even though he can’t get in the gym with his teammates at Hopkins. Andre has been creative in his daily efforts.
“I’ve been riding the bike almost 10 miles a day and going to the park making sure I get up a lot of shots,” Andre said. “I’ve been really working with keeping the tone of my body right and lifting my own body weight.”
Andre will play with Grassroots Sizzle this summer while working with his father and others to help him continue to move forward.
“I’ve made the final decision to play with Sizzle. And really just having a court either indoor or outdoor to have the chance to increase my skills on the court (is what he’s looking forward to). My Father will be training me but also trainers I’ve worked with in the passed will be helping.”
Gray recently picked up his first division one offer from Western Illinois Head Coach Rob Jeter.
“It felt like it wasn’t real and everything went numb, it felt like a blessing and I couldn’t believe it,” Andre said of the offer. “I called everyone that was close to me and I honestly cried because I’ve been working since 8th grade for that moment. And it paid off. That was a goal checked off the list, now I know for sure that I’ll be going to college and playing at a high level.”
Other schools are also in contact with Andre.
“St. Thomas, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Western Illinois, and North Dakota,” Gray listed.
Hopefully Gray can play this summer. In the mean time all that work at the park and with his father, the focus is on the following:
“I’ve been working on my really getting my strength to a college guard level, getting my athletic ability to a professional level( explosiveness, quickness, timing), and being a leader.”
