The solid 6-foot-2, 175-pound combo guard from Wenatchee impressed with his offensive abilities as expected, but also made his mark on the defensive end as well. Long is hopeful AAU ball will ramp up his recruitment but honestly he was just happy to be back on the basketball floor.
“I was just really excited that we had another gym that was opened as there really hasn’t been much of this,” Long said. “This was the first thing I’d been to since March so I was happy to be here.”
At the event, Long got buckets as you would expect him to. He was knocking down outside and mid-range jumpers and effectively using his body to shield off defenders on drives to the hoop. As noted he showed toughness on the defensive end against opponents both big and small and despite the fact it was his first full court action in months, didn’t show a whole lot of rust.
“Since I haven’t been able to get into gyms, I’ve been jump roping, working out, and I have some sand hills next to my house so I’ve been running those every morning,” Long said. “So I’ve just been working on my explosiveness and quickness, while getting bigger and stronger.”
Long gave an update on his recruitment, noting that Army, Air Force, Central Washington, Northwest Nazarene, and Seattle have been in touch. He notes that his contact with Army has been on a weekly basis and that the interest from the military schools has been welcomed.
“I think that the Mountain West is an intriguing conference to go play in as is the Patriot League,” Long said. “As long as I can play basketball at the highest level – I just want to play, so whatever is fine. I just want to have a good connection with the coaches, that’s the biggest thing.”
When club basketball play resumes, Long will be running with Friends of Hoop and he’s looking to continue catching the eyes of college coaches. “Hopefully we can get back into it and maybe in early fall we can have a couple of tournaments,” Long said. “I want to keep on getting more athletic and working harder on my handles and my jump shot.”
Long currently ranks as the #24 player in the PrepHoops Washington Class of 2021 rankings.
