Here were the rising sophomore standouts:
Mark Brown Jr Mark Brown Jr 6'2" | PG Bella Vista Prep | 2023 State AZ (Mountain Pointe)
-A strong and compact guard keeps showing off his upside each week. He is very skilled from mid to the 3pt line and his pull-up is clean. He made multiple pull-ups Thursday night including a game winning 3 in OT. He also showed the ability of making his teammates better, as he is looking more and more like a true PG. He also has improved changing his speeds, which is always important for a PG.
Akeem ’AJ’ Johnson PG 6’1 San Joaquin Memorial (CA)
-Long and skinny lead guard has a super tight handle. He looks like he’s 10 years old with his baby face but has a real burst into the lane and knows how to change speeds plus has a nice floater game. He is always looking to make plays for others and has long arms and legs. It wouldn’t shock me to see him near 6’5 when it’s all said and done and be a taller PG.
Landon Schumaker Landon Schumaker 6'6" | PF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 AZ (AZ Compass Prep)
-Slowly becoming one of the top rebounders in the class locally. He has an elite motor and seems to find the ball among the trees with his will and energy. He handles the ball well for a forward and his passing skills enhance his game. He is taking his game out to the perimeter but can still dominate inside the paint.
Anthony-Lamar Wilcox Anthony-Lamar Wilcox 5'8" | PG Skyline Prep | 2024 AZ (Maricopa)
-An undersized scoring lead guard was one of the top shooters in the league. He gets it off quickly and is extremely consistent. Despite his size he can score and make plays for others with nice passes and a good feel for the game. He has deep range on his shot and was one of the sleeper sophs of the league.
Leonard Romayor Leonard Romayor 5'10" | PG Ironwood | 2023 State AZ (Brophy Prep)
-The rising soph keeps adding to his game this month. He has started showing signs of becoming not just a shooter but a pure PG making plays for others. He can still shoot it from deep plus use the floater game.
Zach Strauss Zach Strauss 5'9" | PG Basha | 2023 State AZ (Basha)
-A top shooter off the catch in his class. He is another undersized guard that is efficient, smart and competitive. He is a dead-eye from the 3pt line and surveys the court smartly to find his spots on the court.
Tarvis Edwards PG 5’5 Valley Vista
-Super fast ball handler who has a true burst into the lane and in the open court. He may be smaller but a sure ball handler and can make shots from inside and out.
