Here are a few guys who earned spots after being previously unranked:
Brooks Carroll, Jamestown
Carroll looked like a potential sleeper/breakout candidate this time a year ago, as he was performing at a high level for ND Attack. He shattered any even moderately high expectations during his junior year, helping Jamestown reach the state semifinals, averaging nearly 15 points and six rebounds while shooting 47 percent from the 3-point line. He lit it up late in the year when the Bluejays were without their best player. He’s a dead-eye shooter from deep and knows how to play off the ball. He’s a good defender too. If he shows a little more as a shot-creator this summer, he could be a top-10 guy.
Jesse White, White Shield
White can get forgotten about a little bit given he’s so far out west at White Shield, but he’s an electric player. The 6-foot lead guard does it all, illustrated by his season averages of 24 points, eight rebounds and eight assists during his junior year. He can score from anywhere, he can defend and he’s a nightmare to slow down in the open court.
Jayce Lowman, Mandan
Lowman played with Carroll on ND Attack last summer and showed flashes of being a potential breakout guy last summer. He broke out in a big way, averaging 14 points per game while shooting 40 percent from the 3-point line for a Mandan team that reached the state tournament. He’s got good length on the wing, a quick and smooth release from deep and the ability to play with or without the ball.
Stevan Garza, Grafton
Garza was viewed as a solid bet to break out this time a year ago and he busted out in a big way, emerging as one of the best guards in Class B. The 6-foot-2 lead guard stuffed the stat sheet for a solid Grafton team, averaging 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists. He’s got deep range, solid size and a smoothness to his game that allows him to get where he wants on the floor.
Grant Romfo, Langdon/Edmore/Munich
LEM was one of the best teams in Class B last year and Romfo taking his game to another level was a big reason why. The 6-foot-1 swingman is one of the best athletes in the state and uses it to his advantage as a high-end defender and slasher, but he also possesses the ability to scorch it from deep.
