Below you will find, listed in alphabetical order by last name, 10 of the top interior scorers from MoCo. This is part of a series that will aim to highlight players based on various superlatives.
Note: these superlative lists will not be mutually exclusive. If someone can handle the ball and do something else (i.e. shoot) at a high level, they will be included in both lists.
Matt Akers | Georgetown Prep ’21
Akers is a post technician. He displays impeccable footwork and is an extremely crafty finisher who can use either hand.
Spencer Caverly Spencer Caverly 6'7" | C Whitman | 2021 MD | Whitman ’21
A workhorse who runs the floor with purpose and is always available for dump-offs, Caverly is fearless in the paint. He has a soft touch and doesn’t mind contact around the basket.
Daouda Dembele Daouda Dembele 6'6" | C Springbrook | 2021 PA | Springbrook ’21
Dembele is a forceful paint presence who plays and finishes above the rim. He has long arms and this gives him the ability to finish high off the glass with relative ease.
TJ Gadsden TJ Gadsden 6'6" | PF St. Andrew's | 2021 MD | St. Andrew’s ’21
A Swiss-Army-Knife of sorts, Gadsden is an explosive finisher at the rim. He’s a graceful athlete who only needs a small lane to exploit the defense.
Marcel Gardner Marcel Gardner 6'9" | C St. Andrew's | 2023 State MD | St. Andrew’s ’23
Towering over most opponents at 6-foot-8, Gardner is a natural inside scorer with length and tangible upside. He has soft hands that help him catch and finish.
Stefan Marcelle Stefan Marcelle 6'7" | C Georgetown Prep | 2022 State MD | Georgetown Prep ’22
Marcelle is a potent threat in the paint as a result of his combination of size, skill, and unrelenting effort. He constantly works hard to establish an early low-post position and is very good at making opponents pay if he’s left with a 1v1 matchup.
Gideon Sahlen Gideon Sahlen 6'8" | C Bullis | 2022 State MD | Bullis ’22
Sahlen was a welcomed addition to Bullis, who fielded a relatively small lineup before this past season. He’s a legit back-to-the-basket scorer who displays solid footwork and can be the hub of an offense.
Shaq Samuels | Richard Montgomery ’21
More of a slasher than an interior scorer, Samuels has incredible length and body control which give him the ability to finish around the basket with seemingly little effort. RM was mainly a perimeter-oriented squad last season, but Samuels gave them the pop they needed around the rim.
Ousmane Sow Ousmane Sow 6'6" | C Sandy Spring | 2021 MD | Sandy Spring ’21
Sow is a sturdily built post prospect who is proficient at scoring in the paint. He demonstrates nice footwork, grips the ball firmly, and can finish with either hand.
Benny Williams Benny Williams 6'8" | SF St. Andrew's | 2021 #35 Nation FL | St. Andrew’s ’21
Williams has learned to use his size to his advantage. The now 6-foot-8 forward is adept at using his size to back down smaller opponents and score in the post. Williams is also a fierce finisher who’s always looking to put someone on a poster.
