Continue Reading2023 prospects can be difficult to evaluate sometimes as they have only had the one season to prepare themselves and show their skills. Fortunately, several guys showed they are already ahead of the curve with their style of play this weekend. Today I take a look at 7 sophomores who impressed at the Indiana Summer Classic this past weekend.
Joey Hart Joey Hart 6'5" | SG Linton-Stockton | 2023 State #214 Nation IN (GPP UA Rise 2023)- #14 in Prep Hoops Indiana 2023 Rankings. Bigger guard/wing. He specifically had a spin move he utilized on the perimeter. Excelled in a catch-and-shoot setting. Gets his shoulders squared to the rim and uses a high release to hit shots consistently.
Devon Holman (Indiana Elite Central)- Unranked guard out of Warren Central. Definitely the best defensive player on his team. Offensively waited for open lanes to attack from the perimeter. Knows how to create opportunities to score when he possesses the ball.
Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn 6'2" | PG Montverde Academy | 2023 #42 Nation FL (Indiana Elite 2023)- #4 in Prep Hoops Indiana 2023 Rankings. In my opinion, the best overall player from the weekend. Extremely fast off the dribble. Almost impossible to guard on the perimeter as he is just too quick. Sees the floor and a solid distributor. Slashes with a purpose and finishes, including a massive dunk.
Joshua Mickens Joshua Mickens 6'4" | PF Lawrence Central | 2023 State IN (Indiana Elite Central)- #33 in Prep Hoops Indiana 2023 Rankings. Lefty that impressed with his elevation and rim protecting. Extremely strong build and capable of taking over a game on the offensive end. Could see his stock continue to rise this Summer.
Sam Orme (GPP UA Rise 2023)- Orme currently is unranked, but should be on scout’s radar’s after watching him this weekend. The 6’6 wing was knocking down almost any shot he put up on the perimeter. His inside game was impressive as he showed a knack for finishing and with either hands as well. Stepped up on the defensive end using his length in a 1-2-2 trap and was able to get his hand on several pass attempts.
Jaron Tibbs Jaron Tibbs 6'4" | SF Cathedral | 2023 State IN (Indiana Elite 2023)- #27 in Prep Hoops Indiana 2023 Rankings. Gets downhill quickly and attacks with a purpose. I was impressed with his ability to rebound the basketball for a guard and his willingness to go up against bigger opponents. Moves his feet well on the defensive end and showed he could defend the perimeter.
Kameron Walter (Indiana Elite South 2023)- Lefty; uses his size and athleticism to seal off posts. Showed an ability to finish through contact and especially was tenacious and persistent when attacking in the paint.
