From the group that came, there were some players that showed their various skills in front of the coaching staff. We will take a look at who was impressive during the camp in Marshall, Texas.
Darrien Perry Darrien Perry 6'1" | PG Plain Dealing | 2021 State LA | 6’0″ | Plain Dealing | 2021
Perry was one of the most polished guards at the camp. He let the game come to him and did not force shots or passes. Perry shot the ball well from the college three line and mid-range. In the open floor, whether in drills or in scrimmage play, he always found the right man. Perry is an all-around talent and showed why he is one of the better guards in Louisiana on this day.
Jack Mottershaw | 6’6″ | Marshall | 2021
Mottershaw is a local product that performed well during drills and scrimmage play. He is very athletic and can change ends of the floor well. Mottershaw is also a solid rebounder and had little trouble defending the rim when given the opportunity. Most of his scoring was off of rebounds and put backs. During drills, it looked like he does have a soft touch. If he can develop a short jumper, he will be highly effective going into his senior season.
Tahaun Ford, Jr. | 6’6″ | Heights | 2020
Ford definitely was one of the best forwards at the camp on Saturday. The 2020 graduate is a quick leaper who makes things happens around the rim. He did not have a signature moment dunking on anyone but he had the opportunity from a couple of the rebound put backs he gathered off the rim. Ford is also good at switching ends in transition. I would be surprised if he does not find a home at ETBU or somewhere else before the summer ends.
Chris Boekhorst | 6’7″ | Saltillo | 2020
Probably the best big on Saturday was Boekhorst. The 6’7″ forward showed an ability to score over either shoulder in drills and an ability to go get rebounds high off the glass. With one step in the paint, he was at the rim constantly finishing over the top. Boekhorst can run the floor as well and knows how to execute a textbook rim run. With his ability to rebound and jump in addition to his height, Boekhorst would be a hidden gem for a next level school.
Jordan Jones | 6’0″ | Core4 Prep | 2020
Jones is the prototypical point guard with the know-how to score. He knows how to play with pace in tranistion. Jones changes speeds to set up plays or to create angles for passes. He has also figured out when he needs to be assertive and when to get others involved. The year of prep school has obviously helped him refine some things and enhance some others. A school looking for a good guard would be happy bringing Jones into the fold.
Iraun Hawkins | 6’0″ | West Mesquite | 2021
The guard out of West Mesquite showed his versatility with and without the ball on Saturday. He knows how to move without the rock and can space to the floor for his jumper or to create driving lanes. Hawkins is quick with the ball but always has his head up. He found several teammates with passes in transition or back door cuts. While he likes to play off the ball, Hawkins looks like he can be a solid point guard given the opportunity.
Trevor Deel | 6’5″ | McLeod | 2020
Deel found himself on the floor alot on Saturday. He is a 6’5″ forward who plays hard and goes after every rebound and loose ball. During drill work, he showed great effectiveness in sealing and finishing. He also has displayed good touch with the short jumper from the free throw line in. He is not a leaper but can finish around the rim adequately. Most importantly, he brings energy. Deel is definitely an energy guy for a team in need of one.
Jacob Watson | 5’11″ | Waxahatchie | 2023
A player who has a while to polish his game is Jacob Watson. The Waxahatchie freshman displayed a calmness only seen by rare freshmen. He played like he belonged on the floor and showed great promise. He has a smooth jumper and will shoot it from anywhere on the floor. Watson also has a nose for the ball and will rebound to gather extra possessions for his team. For an underclassmen, Watson has plenty of potential to be a solid prep star.
There were other players like Ben Ponder (2021/Calvary Baptist), J’colby Roberson (2021/Lincoln Prep), Martin Mcdowell Martin Mcdowell 5'10" | PG Calvary Baptist Academy | 2022 State LA (2022/Calvary Baptist), and Forrest Holifield (2020/Westbrook High) who played well also. Look for many of these 2020 guys to find a home before next season. Watch out for these younger players as well. They should continue to bloom into good players for the respective schools and the next level.
