Below you will find, listed in alphabetical order by last name, 10 of the best board men from Washington D.C. This is part of a series that will aim to highlight players based on various superlatives.
Note: these superlative lists will not be mutually exclusive. If someone can handle the ball and do something else (i.e. shoot) at a high level, they will be included in both lists.
Darren Buchanan Jr. Darren Buchanan Jr. 6'7" | PF Woodrow Wilson | 2022 State #101 Nation MD | Woodrow Wilson ’22
Buchanan did it all for Wilson this past season. Rebounding is of the things he does best from the wing position. Whether in or out of his area, on the offensive or defensive glass, Buchanan finds a way to snag roughly 10 boards per game.
Brock Davis Brock Davis 6'5" | SF Georgetown Day | 2022 State MD | Georgetown Day ’22
A long-limbed, broad-shouldered forward with a strong work rate, Davis is a good out of area rebounder. He’s particularly effective on the offensive glass because of his non-stop motor.
Christian De La Rosa | EL Haynes ’21
De La Rosa is an active big man who plays above the rim. One thing he does well is catching putbacks, meaning it’s a wise idea to put a body on him and box out.
John Ford | St. Albans ’21
Ford’s toughness translates on both the offensive and defensive glass. He’s a bruiser around the basket who works very hard to secure any 50/50 balls that might be in or out of his area.
Amani Hansberry Amani Hansberry 6'7" | C Mount St. Joseph | 2023 State #52 Nation MD | St. John’s ’23
Throughout his breakout freshman campaign, Hansberry was a walking double-double. A consistently active presence on the boards, that trend should continue for the duration of his high school career.
Maurice Johnson Maurice Johnson 6'4" | SF Cesar Chavez | 2021 State MD | Cesar Chavez ’21
The DMV’s top scorer last season, Johnson is more than just a bucket-getter. One thing that the athletic wing does is rebound at a high-level. Johnson is a terrific leaper with long arms and great hands.
Stanley Marsh Stanley Marsh 6'4" | PF Thurgood Marshall | 2021 State MD | Thurgood Marshall ’21
Marsh may be undersized at about 6-foot-3, but he’s a hard worker who understand that rebounding is a key aspect of his role within the team. He plays much bigger than his listed height as a result of his length and showcases great coordination when tracking the ball.
Chris Russell Chris Russell 6'5" | C Sidwell Friends | 2023 State MD | Sidwell Friends ’23
Saying Russell is relentless on the offensive glass might be an understatement. He has really strong hands and is so productive on the boards in part because he’s a fearless rebounder in traffic.
Lucas Siegell Lucas Siegell 6'7" | C St. Albans | 2021 MD | St. Albans ’21
One of the best-kept secrets in the city, Siegel is a mammoth on the glass with a motor that is always running. The 6-foot-7 forward regularly pulls down 10+ boards on a given night.
Stephaun Walker Stephaun Walker 6'7" | PF Coolidge | 2022 State MD | Coolidge ’22
When thinking of names for this list, Walker was one of the first names that came to mind. The forceful paint presence has averaged 10+ boards per game in each of his first two seasons, and should only become more dominant as his broad frame continues to fill out.
