There are times when a college coach can also find a prospect that can fit in well in their system that isn’t well known because they play at a small school with little to no exposure. To top it off there are players who’s stats don’t get reported which makes them even more obscure.
Small schools with talented players are scattered across the state. Often times these talented players don’t specialize in one sport they play multiple sports as well. Here is a slight look at some of the talent at these small schools.
6’7 Kelby Jessen (Piute High School)
Most people wouldn’t know where to locate Piute let alone know that they have a skilled 6’7 junior that can play. Piute High School is located off of Highway 89 East of Beaver. The small 1A school is home to 150 students in a school that is 7-12th grade. If stats where properly taken Kelby would likely average 12 rebounds a game. That would make his 17 points a game even more impressive. He will quietly score over 1,000 points in his career. It would not be a surprise if he score 20 and haul in 15 rebounds a game next season. Not only is he tough down on the blocks and from 15 feet in. He can occasionally step out and knock them down from outside.
6’8 Keba Keita Keba Keita 6'9" | C Wasatch Academy | 2022 State #157 Nation UT (American Heritage)
While new schools are popping up every few years because of the population growth in Utah. Public, private and Charter School will often times have a solid player come through. American Heritage the private school in American Fork has more than just a solid player roaming the halls. Keba Keita Keba Keita 6'9" | C Wasatch Academy | 2022 State #157 Nation UT is a solid Division 1 prospect. The 6’8 shot-blocker can really get up and down the floor. Often times it seems like he is moving faster than the guards. He has the athletic ability to catch the ball anywhere near the square and flush it down with authority. In the pick n’ roll he can sure cause issues for teams not ready to help the helper. As a sophomore he will be a double-double machine for years to come.
6’2 Ky Brown Ky Brown 6'3" | CG Beaver | 2021 State UT (Beaver High School)
Most Utah natives know of Beaver, Utah because it is a notable city as you head towards Southern Utah on the I-15. Beaver High School located in Beaver, Utah that also has a Beaver as a mascot is no stranger to success as they have captured multiple state championships in not only basketball but football as well. Ky Brown Ky Brown 6'3" | CG Beaver | 2021 State UT has had success since his freshman year when him and his teammates captured a State Championship. Fast forward to his junior year Ky is named 2A Player of the Year and captures his 2nd State Championship in basketball. Ky has a unique game because he enjoys the defensive end of the floor. Often times guarding the opposing teams best player. He is unselfish as he is always looking to pass, but don’t mistake that for not having the ability to score because he can score the basketball too. Ky scored in double-figures in every game but three this past year and he is well on his way to the 1,000 points club as well. Ky can play 1-3 which makes him a solid college prospect.
