In most cases they were all playing behind upperclassmen or loaded teams. That is the only reason these players did not get the recognition they deserved but coaches took notice. But in the coming seasons watch out for this impressive bunch.
JAKAI LESTER. 6”3 SO (2023). ST DOMS H S
Was starting, until a shoulder injury, sidelined him for the last 4 weeks of the season. Can finish around rim. Very good rebounder and defends the post well. Also closes out on shooters. Can play with his back to basket. Continues to develope his offensive skill set to become more of a threat on the offensive end.
DEREK SCHECTER 5”7. SO (2023). MOUNT SINAI H S
Derek just completed his first season as a freshman. Showed he has a good handle. Very good court vision. Was also able to shoot the three. Needs to gain some strength which will come as he continues to grow. Remember he still very young.
DYLAN MADDEN. 5”9. SO. (2023). BALDWIN H S
This young point guard, does everything you want, at the 1. He can score on his own. He knows who to get the ball too. Has the ability to make players around him better. Gets to the rim, but can also drill the three. Needs to work on his defense and get stronger physically. But will, as he continues to grow.
MATT GARSIDE. 5”11. SO (2023). KINGS PARK H S
Coming off a JV season where he averaged 25ppg. The varsity is looking forward to having him compete for a starting job. Matt’s skill set is already there. Plus, he is a lights out shooter. Will have to adjust to the physicality of the varsity game, especially on the defensive end. But is a mentally tough kid who will take the challenge and embrace it.
ANTHONY FOLLET. 6”3. SO (2023). PORTLEDGE H S
Crafty lefty can get to the basket and finish. Outstanding perimeter shooter. Very smooth getting into the lane. Good defender with his lanky body. Needs to add some muscle. Has been working on his foot speed. This will all come and he will be a force, in the next 3 years.
JAYVON BUCKERY. 6”3. SO (2023). LONG ISLAND CITY H S
The young man is a mountain. (6”3 295) . He is a tremendous passer with really good post moves. He can handle the ball. And for a big man can get to the basket. He needs to work on his stamina. Lots of upside.
DANTE BROOKS. 5”9. SO (2023) PORTLEDGE H S
Starting pg since the 8th grade. Speedy player who is a relentless defender. Really good with either hand. Quick first step who can blow by defenders and finish at rim through contact. Tremendous leaper. Has improved his shot and is a star in the making. Needs to bulk up but still has time to add strength and muscle.
