This group made significant contributions to the success of their respective high school teams. Here’s a list of NorCal class 2023 prospects to keep an eye on as they navigate their way through high school basketball.
Jalen Lewis 6’9 F/C, Bishop O’Dowd (Oakland CA)
No other Freshman had a bigger impact on their team in NorCal than Lewis. A big strong solid versatile player helped lead Bishop O’Dowd to the NorCal Open Finals and a showdown with Sheldon from Sacramento, a game that never took place. Lewis has a good understanding of the game, and at 6’9, a rapidly improving skill set that sets him apart. He’s already getting interest from Major DI programs. He averaged 9.8 ppg, 6.3 rebs.
Varick Lewis 6’3 W/G, Monterey Trail (Sacramento CA)
The scoring guard from Sacramento is ahead of schedule in his development, he has a mature game for a Freshman and has the stats to prove it. 22.1 ppg, 6.3 rebs, 2.8 asts, and 2 stls a game. He has good range and has to be guarded at the 3pt line. His balance and body control allows him to be an effective player on the wings and in transition. He racks up points on drives, and pull up jumpers. A season high 33pts.
Kodey Weary Kodey Weary 6'6" | SF Coronado NV | 2023 NV 6’5 G/F, Weston Ranch (Stockton CA)
Weary is a long armed wiry prospect still developing his skill set, his contributions helped Weston Ranch get to the DII Finals in NorCal. In due time he looks like a player that’s going to have to be accounted for. A good conditioned athlete with versatility. His long reach and mobility makes him a good defender, rebounder, and potential shot blocker. With an improved skill set, he’ll raise his stock and a be a major contributor to his team. He averaged 6.8 ppg, 5.8 rebs, 1.8 blks.
Tyler Harris Tyler Harris 6'6" | SF Granada | 2023 State #210 Nation CA-N 6’5 G/F, Newark Memorial, (Newark CA)
Harris a long wiry prospect who seems to be more guard oriented at this point, his ball handling skills are somewhat raw right now, but with additional work, his handles will improve. He rebounds and pushes the transition break, his vision and passes are good. On the wings and in transition, he can get to the paint. He has a long reach and actively goes after rebounds. He defends the post and the wings. He’ll get more scoring opportunities in the coming season.
Courtney Anderson Courtney Anderson 6'4" | SG Dublin | 2023 State #151 Nation CA-N Jr. 6’4 Guard Salesian Prep (Richmond CA)
Anderson was a participant at the 2019 USA Basketball Junior Mini Camp in Colorado. The only prospect from NorCal in his age group 14. His playing time at Salesian Prep was somewhat limited, but he did show at times why he’s regarded as a top prospect in this class. A good quality jump shot with range, good form, and lift. Good handles, a quick first step on the drive, and can finish above the rim. The more games he plays the better.
Jordan Bobo Jordan Bobo 6'7" | SF Grant | 2023 State CA-N 6’7 G/F Grant (Sacramento CA)
Bobo is an intriguing prospect, a player that seems to be more comfortable playing on the wings. There’s no question he’ll have to show he’s capable of being a productive player away from the basket. At 6’7 and growing if he can develop his wing skills, his stock will rise. He has work to do rebounding and defending.
King Wilhite King Wilhite 6'1" | PG Archbishop Riordan | 2023 NV 6’0 Point Guard Saint Ignatius (San Francisco CA)
A prospect that poses the necessary tools to be NorCal’s top point guard in this class of 2023 prospects. There’s no lack of confidence in his game, his handles and quickness allow him to readily get into the paint from multiple angles, what he decides to do after that is what separates him. He’s very effective, his vision, decision making, and ability to score makes him tough to handle. He shows good patience being a facilitator. A good pull up jumper, fast in transition.
