Continue ReadingThe COVID-19 shutdown hasn’t slowed down anyone, including colleges themselves. Colleges are moving to online scouting and are still looking for quality recruits to stock up their future classes with. Recently, many freshman in New York made waves as they receive their first or first few offers. These offers, especially the players most recent ones, are hard to keep track, so this new series, The Latest, is designed to do just that!
Royal Brown | Cohoes HS
2/18/20: Brown receives an offer from Creighton University
Player Analysis: Royal Brown is a true triple threat player. He contains the court vision and awareness to be able to spot the right teammate at the right time, while he also has a high, quick releasing jump shot. This combines with his ability to use speed, height and direction changes to get to the rim allows defenders to be truly perplexed when they see him at the rim.
Edwin Daniel Linares | WHEELS HS
5/13/20: Daniel Linares receives an offer from Bryant University
Player Analysis: The 6-8 power forward from WHEELS in the Bronx is gifted with size, and he very well knows how to use it. Linares uses his size to be a paint protector, but he also has combined athleticism and speed to his accolade list. These qualities, which are uncommon at this height, allow Linares to make crafty, unguardable plays toward the rim and guard any position, from towering forward to nimble guard.
Diovion Famakinde | Thomas Jefferson High School
3/26/20: Famakinde receives an offer from New Mexico State
4/13/20: Famakinde receives an offer from Manhattan University
Player Analysis: Famakinde earned his honors in middle school, rising to the national level. Now, in the high school stage against adults, Famakinde hasn’t regressed, but rather progressed. Famakinde is able to know how to properly use his size on offense, from using it to body defenders on a drive to the basket to posting up on smaller defenders who dare challenge him in the post.
Jahnathan Lamothe | St. Frances Academy
4/27/20: Lamothe receives an offer from Austin Peay University
Player Analysis: Lamothe comes from Maryland to New York, where he should set up shop as part of the state’s elite talent group. Lamothe contains a consistent shooting arm and a three-point flick, which is able to be used in any type of post-1970 basketball offense. Lamothe doesn’t shy away from defense, either, but rather thrives on it, where he has built enough strength to guard high school forwards, even as a freshman.
Jayden Reid | Long Island Lutheran
4/9/20: Reid receives an offer from Stony Brook University
Player Analysis: Jayden Reid contains the necessary skills to be a valuable point guard, no matter which college offense he decides to play with. His speed and agility, combined with his quick, precise, and complex handles allow him to dazzle defenders while he works towards the rim. Reid possesses the skill of quickly turning defense into offense and starting fastbreaks, while he can also shine as the playmaker for the team.
