This weekend PHD will hold our own “South Dakota Open Period” running through games from this past winter looking at some of the best talent in the state. We will get some of their highlights out on social media as well as offering our comments on what we think makes them standout talents.
Today we give you our list of guards college coaches should know, in South Dakota’s junior class. Players that would be competing on 17u teams with some of the best teams on several different circuits.
Top Six Prospects
Paul Bruns of Dakota Valley (6’4). Bruns is committed to North Dakota and is the top guard prospect in this class. Is Bruns a fit for the national top 500 in the 2021 class? Something we are interested in tracking.
Brady Fritz of Winner (6’2). Fritz is a big number producer and a top six level prospect in the South Dakota 2021 class. Will Fritz earn an NSIC offer? Several top NAIA offers? Fritz is one of the most explosive players in the class utilizing a basket attack that is controlled and strong getting to the rim on balance for finishes. Brady has also improved his range.
Chase Mason of Viborg-Hurley (6’4). A good sized guard prospect that ranks among the best 15 college prospects overall in his class. Mason his a pretty release at the end of his deep wind up and he gets his look over the top of smaller guards that are usually defending him. Mason uses his length as well as anybody on defense for deflections, steals, and blocks, plus his vision as a passer is outstanding.
Michael Paulson of Sioux Falls Roosevelt (6’3). Paulson is an All Metro player that is also a top 20 prospect in the state for his class. When Roosevelt was playing up and down pressuring, or pushing pace after misses or makes, Paulson looked to be at his best. He was a pest in passing lanes and getting to the ball after stopping the advance and he was really good in trail three or kickout situations.
Micah Swallow of Rapid City Central (6’2). All State guard that is a top ten prospect overall in the class, a top five wing. Swallow is one of the quickest players off his feet in the state allowing him to finish above the help after turning the corner to the rim. He’s also really good in finishing second chance opportunities and straight run transition plays.
Eli Williams of Sioux Falls Washington (6’1). Williams is a first team all metro player doubling as a top 15 prospect in South Dakota. What caught our attention when watching Williams play was how his quick first step allowed him to make plays at the present time and in the future. After attacking the angle in one on one situations as well as coming off ball screens, defenders then seemed to sink allowing Williams to score over the top. The hesitation attack is another item we really liked and that speed on the attack beating the help was impressive. Certainly a player we are watching close as a major stock raiser in this grade.
Next Six
Jarron Bighorn of Red Cloud (6’0).
Conner Geddes of Harrisburg (6’2).
Dylan Goodhart of Sisseton (6’2).
Garret Kerkvliet of Castlewood (6’2).
Aydin Lloyd of Brandon Valley (6’3).
Xavier Van Beek of Sioux Falls Christian (6’0).
