Continue ReadingLike some of the other regions, this region is unchanged with the realignment. This group features Basha, Brophy, Chandler, Hamilton, and Perry. There is no question that this is the deepest region from top to bottom. This will be an extremely competitive region with a number of teams returning top tier talent.
Basha (2019-2020 Record: 14-14, 3-5)
Basha is regarded as one of the best coached teams in the state. Unfortunately, they are in a region with many of the other coaches who are widely regarded in this category. With that said, they were competitive in the vast majority of their games and finished fourth in this region last year.
While the group will have prospects to replace, Trenton McLaughlin Trenton McLaughlin 6'5" | SF Basha | 2021 State AZ led the team in scoring and was one of the leaders in a number of other categories. With their top prospect back from least season, Basha should be competitive in this tough region once again. Further, despite his youth, Brady Reynolds Brady Reynolds 6'5" | PF Basha | 2022 State AZ provided the team with decent size and a consistent threat near the rim. Between these two guys, Basha will have at least a guarantee of top guys ready to compete at a high level.
Brophy (2019-2020 Record: 17-9, 6-2)
Brophy won this region last year and it is between them an Chandler to be the favorite to win it again. With Desi Burrage Desi Burrage 6'0" | CG Brophy Prep | 2021 State AZ , Patrick Chew Patrick Chew 6'4" | SG Brophy | 2022 State AZ , and Miles Nash Miles Nash 6'2" | PG Brophy Prep | 2022 State AZ returning, this group should have high expectations. Much like Basha, this team is extremely well coached. Further, they will have the benefit of having one of the top backcourts in the state with the three prospects mentioned returning.
Brophy does lose some key pieces from last year’s talented team. However, they will most likely replace instead of rebuild. My expectation would be for this group to compete to hang another region title banner in their gym as their strong guard play will enable them to dictate the tempo in the vast majority of games.
Chandler (2019-2020 Record: 19-9, 4-4)
Chandler has the most talent of any team in the state returning. Carson Kelly Carson Kelly 5'8" | PG Chandler | 2021 State AZ is a tremendous point guard with good change of pace and direction. Further, he has a high basketball IQ and can run the show for Chandler. He is paired with another skilled guard in Mekhi Mason Mekhi Mason 6'4" | CG AZ Compass Prep | 2022 State AZ . Like Brophy, their backcourt is stacked and will aid them in being able to compete with anyone in the state.
In addition to a good backcourt, this team has length and skill in other positions as well. Isaiah Broady Isaiah Broady 6'8" | PF AZ Compass Prep | 2021 State AZ is one of the most intriguing wings in the state due to his length and skill set. Further, this team returns many other key components of last years group. In fact, this team has the least turnover of any team in the region. Again, a well coached team with plenty of talent.
Hamilton (2019-2020 Record: 19-8, 5-3)
Hamilton finished second in this region and Doug Harris is as good of a coach as there is. However, this team loses more talent than any team in the region. Christian Valle Christian Valle 6'2" | SG Hamilton | 2020 State AZ and Jamar Brown Jamar Brown 6'3" | SG Hamilton | 2020 State AZ earned all-region distinctions and were well deserving. The issue is that they will not be on the roster next season due to graduating.
With that said, Hamilton does have Jacob Enriquez Jacob Enriquez 6'4" | SF Phhoenix Prep | 2021 State AZ and Adrian Galindo Adrian Galindo 5'11" | PG Hamilton | 2021 State AZ are on the roster and both are prospects whom are highly regarded. The expectation is that these two will have a lot of the weight on their shoulders this upcoming season.
Perry (2019-2020 Record: 15-14, 2-6)
Perry, liked all the other teams in this region, is well coached and has talent. In fact, they have a prospect whom many consider to have the highest ceiling of anyone in the state in Dylan Anderson Dylan Anderson 7'0" | C Perry | 2022 State #88 Nation AZ . Despite the talent on this roster, Perry finished last in this region due to the amount of depth. In fact, they did not lose an in-state game by more than ten points all season.
Christian Tucker Christian Tucker 6'3" | CG Perry | 2021 State AZ will be a key part of this team as well. Perry had their fair share of bigs. However, more consistent guard play will enable this team to take that next step. Tucker will be a crucial part of that. Look for Perry to take some huge strides next season.
