Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several prospects coming off a strong junior season who are poised to crack the rankings in the future.
Lucas Hammeke, 6’0, 2021, Hutch Trinity (3rd team)
A 2A third team All-State performer last season, Hammeke is a reliable scoring option who looks to extend the floor with his outside shooting. He can handle the ball and beat defenders with his dribble, but he keeps his head up and makes smart passes both on the wing and inside. Also a strong defender who stays with the ball and can get up and block shots. A quick player with length, a high release point and a soft 3-pointer that often gets the bounce.
Zach Koontz, 6’0, G, 2021, Berean Academy
Another underrated player who can score, defend and get out in transition. Koontz is a capable scorer who can get touches inside the perimeter and on the arc. He keeps his eyes on the ball and looks to box out, apply strong pressure to the ball and moves his feet well. A 1A All-State honorable mention who does a lot of little things well and brings leadership to the floor for Academy.
Colton McCarty, 6’0, G, 2021, Cheylin
A strong athlete with a good deal of hustle, strength and athleticism. McCarty was one of Cheylin’s top leading scorers and showed a knack for being in the right place at the right time and timing his rebounds. He is physical for his position and saw time inside and out. He’s a quick athlete who earned 1A All-State honorable mention honors for his work. McCarty finished the season averaging 15.7 points, 1.4 assists, 9.4 rebounds (team-high), 2.5 steals and nearly one block per game.
Ethan Means, 6’1, G, 2021, Stockton
Beans is a strong two-way player who makes smart passes, defends the ball and can come away with loose balls and defensive rebounds. He keeps his eyes down the floor and looks to pass ahead two teammates for transition baskets. He can connect from three-point range and has a live handle and good instincts. Means earned 1A All-State honorable mention honors for his play last season and averaged 14.2 points, 4.5 assists, 6.8 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game showcasing all around productivity on both ends of the floor.
Trey Rolfs, 6’0, G, 2021, Little River
Rolfs is a productive player who looks to distribute the ball and score when he has an open look. He has good handles and can operate well against man and zone defenses. He is an underrated rebounder and is a scoring threat opponents have to keep their eyes on. A 1A All-State honorable mention last season, Rolfs averaved 13.9 points, 1.6 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. Rolfs is a player who has control, leadership and a high IQ.
