1. DJ vs Taj – The pros are we are lucky to have two of the nation’s top incoming freshmen in our backyard. The cons are, I have to rank one ahead of the other. Taj Degorville has the size and strength to be a dominating wing. When I watched him last summer, I thought he would be the clear cut choice for #1 player in his class. Then this fall I was introduced to DJ Thomas. He has the skill and IQ to have a long career in this game. Both have been productive, and I can’t remember a game where they haven’t been the best player on the floor.
2. Are Josiah Cunningham and Jase Richardson Twins? – I have been watching a ton of Vegas Elite film lately, and something that jumps out at me is how similar the games of Cunningham and Richardson are. Both are excellent slashers capable of hitting the open 3. Both play with high motors and are terrors in transition. Throw in the fact that one of them is a lefty, and they are mirror images of each other. There is a very good chance that they might be the first tie in the history of the PH Nevada rankings.
3. Class of Bigs – If you follow Prephoops Nevada, you know I use the phrase, size is at a premium a lot. While it’s usually true, the class of 2024 is shaping up to be one of the better ones for bigs. There’s 6’6 Noah Westbrook, 6’5 Ryder Bryant, 6’6 RJ Whitmore, and 6’5 Anthony Nwuli. Each brings there own set of unique skills. Bryant is a banger, Westbrook can stretch the floor, Whitmore has the most developed post-game, and Nwuili is the best athlete. While it may be difficult to separate them, I’m glad to have a strong crop of bigs to evaluate.
4. We already have a sleeper – I don’t know if many people are familiar with Gergory Burrell. The 6’0 wing is powerfully built and has the frame to fit in immediately on the varsity level. He’s still raw in some of his decision making, however his body improved so much between 7th and 8th grade, if he improves at the same rate between 8th and 9th grade, he’s going to put the city on notice.
5. Top sniper is? – In addition to bigs, this class also has some snipers. I mentioned Cunningham and Richardson, but perhaps the best pair of snipers may be Nick Jefferson who is going to Bishop Gorman and Jordan Cosby who is going to Spring Valley. Jefferson is instant offense who can get hot and knockdown 3’s in a hurry. Cosby is a 5’9 shooter that shoots it effortlessly from the college 3. Should be a lot of fun watching these two shoot it out over the next couple of years.
